PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the University of Connecticut Health Center dental laboratories this class is accountable for performing complicated or unusual technical work in the construction and repair of dental prosthetic appliances on prescription of a licensed dentist.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Work under the limited supervision of the Director of the Dental Prosthetic Laboratory, licensed dentist or other professional of higher grade.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

May lead dental laboratory technicians and other employees as assigned.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Constructs difficult crowns, bridgework and dentures; 
  • Sets up artificial teeth for denture cases of unusual or abnormal nature; 
  • Surveys study costs for unusual or exceptionally difficult partial dentures; 
  • Plans and designs special prosthetic appliances, particularly those involving maxillo-facial prostheses; 
  • In collaboration with a licensed dentist performs all intermediate laboratory procedures preparatory to any of preceding duties; 
  • Schedules cases through laboratory; 
  • Compiles required reports pertaining to cases completed or under construction; 
  • Maintains ledger of cases sent out for special work; 
  • Maintains working stock level of all supplies and materials required for use in laboratory; 
  • Conducts on job training of new, unusual or specialized techniques; 
  • Evaluates new materials and techniques for possible use in laboratory; 
  • Continues research on and testing of innovations and improvements; 
  • Keep laboratory clean and equipment in good working order; 
  • Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

  • Considerable knowledge of
    • dental or oral anatomy with normal and abnormal variations thereof at a technical level; 
    • practices, processes and materials used in restorative dentistry; 
  • Considerable mechanical and artistic skill and judgment in manufacture of dental laboratory products; 
  • Skills
    • interpersonal skills; 
    • oral and written communication skills;
  • Ability to keep records and prepare reports.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Five (5) years of experience in dental laboratory technology.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

  • Successful completion of a one (1) year program in dental laboratory technology may be substituted for two (2) years of the General Experience.
  • Successful completion of the Certified Dental Technician (CDT) examination offered by the National Board for Certification of Dental Technicians may be substituted for the General Experience
