PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner this class is accountable for performing the most complex technical duties related to autopsy and postmortem medicolegal death investigations.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the limited supervision of the Forensic Technician Supervisor or other employee of higher grade.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

May lead/supervise lower level employees as assigned.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Performs a range of duties with emphasis on special techniques and more complex assignments using advanced techniques;
  • Picks up decomposed and traumatized bodies;
  • Prepares bodies for autopsy and subsequent release to funeral directors;
  • Assists in performance of autopsies;
  • Assists in removal and dissection of organs, collection of body fluids and retention of specimens for special studies;
  • Removes and weighs organs;
  • Prepares fixative solutions;
  • Maintains cleanliness and sanitation of autopsy facilities and equipment;
  • Takes inventory of and makes receipt for clothing and valuables;
  • Maintains chain of custody of body evidence from crime scenes;
  • Assists in training of new staff;
  • Assists in maintenance of appropriate records;
  • May take fingerprints and photographs;
  • May assist in removal of bodies from hospitals and/or secured crime scene areas;
  • May take and develop X rays;
  • May lead Forensic Technicians in performing autopsies and other related duties;
  • Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

  • Considerable knowledge of gross human anatomy;
  • Knowledge of forensic pathology related laboratory/surgical equipment, procedures, techniques and terminology;

    • perform calculations according to prescribed procedures.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Two (2) years of experience related to postmortem examination and anatomic pathology.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SPECIAL EXPERIENCE

One (1) year of the General Experience must have been at the level of a Forensic Technician.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

College training in the biological or physical sciences or as a licensed embalmer may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equaling one-half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of two (2) years.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Incumbents in this class must possess and retain a current valid Connecticut Motor Vehicle Operator's License.
  • Incumbents in this class must be available for calls on an emergency basis.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class must be willing to undergo periodic tests or immunizations for communicable diseases as necessary.
