PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In a state agency this class is accountable for performing the most complex tasks and specialized photographic techniques in a wide range of highly technical assignments.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the limited supervision of an employee of higher grade.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

May lead photographers or photographic technicians; may train police, technical or non-technical personnel in photographic techniques.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • In addition to general duties performed by a Photographer, performs a full range of difficult and complex tasks including forensic or bio-medical photography, photomacrography, infrared and ultraviolet, cinematography, video, large format camera (4x5 or larger), line and continuous tone copying;
  • Operates specialized equipment and uses special materials;
  • Documents and reconstructs submitted evidence;
  • Records crime scenes and areas of civil disturbances;
  • Produces court exhibits and photographic evidence;
  • Maintains computerized photographic and related equipment;
  • May testify as an expert witness;
  • Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

  • Considerable knowledge of principles and practices of general photography including taking, developing and processing photographs;
  • Knowledge of
    • line and continuous tone copying;
    • such specialized areas as infrared and ultraviolet, large format camera, photomacrography, cinematography, video and any related knowledge in fields of forensic or bio-medical photography;
  • Skills
    • interpersonal skills;
    • oral and written communication skills;
    • in taking crime scene and field photographs;
  • Ability to
    • design and prepare photographic presentations;
    • file search and retrieve photographic evidence;
    • utilize computer software;
  • Supervisory ability.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Two (2) years of experience in special photography leading to proficiency in the technical areas above.

NOTE: Special photography is interpreted as work involving the use of specialized techniques and equipment beyond that required for merely taking, developing and processing photographs.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

College training in photography at an accredited college may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equalling one-half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of one (1) year.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Incumbents in this class will be required to possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator's License.

CHARACTER REQUIREMENTS

In addition to the checking of references and of facts stated in the application, a background investigation of each candidate may be made before names are certified for appointment.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class may have to handle or be exposed to hazardous materials contaminated with communicable diseases.

COMPENSATION GUIDELINES

  • The classification of Specialized Photographer is assigned to Salary Group ES 21a.
  • Employees shall proceed through that salary group and then shall proceed to the maximum salary of Salary Group ES 22.
  • The Job Code is identified as Salary Plan EE in CORE-CT.
