PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In the Office of the State Building Inspector this class is accountable for supervising the state elevator inspection operations.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Receives general direction from the deputy to the State Building Inspector or other administrative employee of higher grade.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Supervises Elevator Inspectors and clerical staff.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
- Assigns and supervises unit workload;
- Reviews inspection reports and test results;
- Approves plans for new or remodeled installations and conducts initial acceptance inspection;
- Performs in-depth investigations of accidents involving lifting devices;
- Performs follow up on challenged inspections;
- Develops and implements administrative and operational procedures for conducting elevator inspections;
- Provides training for inspectors;
- Supervises collection of elevator certification fees;
- Performs related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY
- Considerable knowledge of
- standard methods and materials used in construction and operation of lifting devices;
- signal systems, installation drawings and wiring diagrams;
- relevant state laws and regulations;
- inspection and investigation methods and techniques;
- Considerable
- interpersonal skills;
- oral and written communication skills;
- Ability to utilize computer software
- Supervisory ability.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE
Seven (7) years of experience as a licensed elevator craftsman.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SPECIAL EXPERIENCE
Four (4) years of the General Experience must have been inspecting elevators at the level of Elevator Inspector.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED
College training in mechanical or electrical engineering may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equalling one-half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of three (3) years.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Incumbents in this class must possess at the time of appointment and maintain during employment an elevator craftsman license.
- Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.
- Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license.
