PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In the Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection, Division of State Police this class is accountable for overseeing operational activities of a specialized section or may be assigned as Deputy Commander to the head of a district or bureau.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Receives limited direction from an officer of higher rank.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Supervises assigned police and civilian personnel in a specialized section, district or bureau.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
- Plans and oversees the overall operation of a specialized section;
- Oversees all personnel assigned within command responsibility;
- Inspects and evaluates work performance of those personnel assigned to command;
- Instructs assigned personnel in operations and activities of specialized section or district;
- Supervises continuous training and development of personnel assigned to command;
- Analyzes and evaluates systems within command and makes recommendations for improvement;
- Maintains liaison with other law enforcement and state agencies, news media and general public;
- Oversees recordkeeping and administrative activities of command;
- Keeps superiors abreast of police and administrative problems in command through written and oral reports;
- Reviews actions of subordinate commanders and/or supervisors in regard to employee grievances and general administration of command;
- Prepares and delivers speeches on law enforcement topics as required;
- May assume primary command responsibility as required at major crime scenes, natural or civil disturbances involving deployment of State Police personnel;
- May be assigned as Deputy Commander to head of a district or bureau;
- Performs related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE
One (1) year of experience as a State Police Lieutenant.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Incumbents in this class must possess and retain a current Connecticut Motor Vehicle Operator's license.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Incumbents in this class must possess sufficient strength, stamina, agility and endurance to perform all the duties of the class.
COMPENSATION GUIDELINES
In accordance with applicable collective bargaining agreement's compensation guidelines.
