PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
At the University of Connecticut Health Center this class is accountable for transporting discharged patients to long-term care facilities or their home environment and for responding to emergency medical calls.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the general supervision of a Fire Lieutenant, Shift Commander or other officer of higher rank.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
May lead lesser experienced emergency medical technicians as assigned.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
- Operates an emergency medical vehicle to transport discharged patients to long-term care facilities and home environment;
- Operates and monitors communications equipment to maintain contact with dispatchers;
- Assists receiving facility in obtaining and recording patient’s vital statistics and circumstances of the call;
- Prepares reports for billing and other record keeping purposes;
- Responds to emergency calls for service involving medical emergencies, fires, accidents, hazardous materials incidents and other emergencies;
- Assists paramedics and other emergency medical responders in providing emergency medical and health care;
- Provides emergency medical care to the ill and injured within the scope of an Emergency Medical Technician;
- Assesses the nature and extent of illness or injury of patients to establish and prioritize emergency medical procedures;
- Maintains vehicles and medical and communication equipment, and replenishes first aid equipment and supplies;
- Sterilizes equipment and ambulance and operates within infection control protocol;
- Participates in training, public education and equipment maintenance;
- May operate an emergency vehicle to and from the scene of an emergency;
- Performs related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE
One (1) year of experience as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT).
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Incumbents in this class must possess and retain a valid State of Connecticut or National Registry - Certified EMT with cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification.
- Incumbents in this class must possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license with proper endorsements.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Incumbents must have general good health, be free from any disease or injury which would impair health or usefulness and possess and retain sufficient physical strength, stamina, agility, endurance and visual and auditory acuity required to perform all the duties of the class.
- Applicants may be required to pass a physical examination.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Incumbents in this class may be exposed to a moderate amount of lifting equipment, some mental stress in responding to life and death emergencies and to strongly disagreeable conditions including exposure to weather.
