PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In the Department of Public Health Laboratory this class is accountable for supervising the Scientific Supportive Services Section.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the general direction of the Director of Public Health Laboratories.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Supervises laboratory employees.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
- Supervises the following central scientific supportive services operations:
- preparation and standardization of culture media and reagents;
- supply, preparation and sterilization of glassware and materials;
- procurement, care and management of laboratory animals;
- preliminary processing of blood specimens;
- receipt and routine of specimens and samples;
- preparation and distribution of mailing and shipping containers for laboratory specimens;
- inspection, maintenance, fabrication and repair of general plant and laboratory equipment;
- sterilization and disposal of infections wastes;
- requisitioning, receipt, storage, issue and inventory control of all supplies and equipment used in laboratory;
- maintenance of adequate supplies essential to laboratory functions;
- Performs related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY
- Considerable knowledge of
- scope of services provided by the laboratories;
- methods, materials, techniques and equipment used in washing and sterilization of laboratory glassware;
- Knowledge of
- procurement, housing and care of laboratory animals;
- supervising maintenance of laboratory equipment;
- methods used in preparing stains, solutions and culture media;
- Considerable
- interpersonal skills;
- oral and written communication skills;
- Considerable ability to order laboratory supplies and maintain inventories;
- Supervisory ability.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE
Six (6) years of experience in a medical, research or health laboratory including experience in washing and sterilization of glassware, culture media preparation, procurement and management of laboratory animals, preparation and mailing of laboratory specimen containers or storekeeping.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SPECIAL EXPERIENCE
One (1) year of the General Experience must have been in a supervisory/lead capacity.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED
College training in the biological or physical sciences may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equalling one-half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of four (4) years for a Bachelor's degree.
