PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
At UConn Health, this class is accountable for acting as a working supervisor for Surgical Technologists engaged in facilitating safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures by ensuring that the area is environmentally safe, equipment is working properly and the procedures are conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Receives general direction from the Surgeon or Circulating Registered Nurse in the assigned operating room; reports administratively to the Nurse Manager.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Leads Surgical Technologists and other staff as assigned.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
- Plans workflow and determines priorities;
- Schedules, assigns, oversees and reviews work;
- Conducts or assists in conducting performance evaluations;
- Ensures that specialty-trained staff is present on all cases;
- Establishes and ensures the implementation of procedures;
- Recommends the development of policies and procedures;
- Provides or facilitates the orientation and continuing education of all technician staff in the perioperative areas;
- Works closely with the medical staff to ensure all equipment needs are met for scheduled cases;
- Using ER system ensures preferences cards are updated as needed;
- Serves as liaison to the Central Sterile, Material Management and Vendors regarding the daily preparation of instrumentation, supplies, equipment and implants;
- Serves as liaison with other operating units and agencies and outside officials regarding unit policies and procedures;
- Properly positions patient using appropriate equipment;
- Sets up sterile environment with instruments, supplies, equipment and medications/solutions needed for procedure;
- Maintains aseptic technique and observes for "breaks in technique";
- Maintains, cares for and labels all surgical specimens while on surgical field and confirms identity of all specimens when transferring to Circulating RN;
- Assists in application of sterile dressings, appliances, prostheses, casts and moving/transporting patient as necessary;
- Decontaminates all equipment, instruments, supplies and rooms according to hospital standards;
- Compiles and makes available all necessary supplies, equipment and instrumentation based on needs of patient and surgical team;
- Observes and protects patient from injury or harm;
- Observes and reports safety hazards;
- Performs appropriate counts with Circulator prior to and before incision is closed;
- Observes safe electrosurgical practices;
- Follows established standards for medication safety on sterile field;
- Assists in housekeeping duties and maintaining cleanliness of department;
- May serve as surgical circulating or second assist if required and trained;
- Performs related duties as required.

- Knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures and implementation, tools and technologies to facilitate the performance of invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures;

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE
An Associate's degree from an approved surgical technologist program and three (3) years of experience as a surgical technologist.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED
- Completion of a formal in-house hospital program with documented experience of two (2) years in all surgical services may be substituted for two (2) years of the General Experience.
- Graduation from an accredited Surgical Technologist program and experience providing a combined total of five (5) years of full-time equivalent experience may be substituted for the General Experience.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Incumbents must be certified by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA).
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Incumbents in this class may be required to lift patients and stand for long periods; may be exposed to moderately disagreeable conditions.
- Required to wear surgical attire according to hospital policy.
