PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In a state agency this class is accountable for independently performing a full range of tasks involved in operating a PBX telephone switchboard, desk console, or other electronic telephone system and for acting as a receptionist.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the general supervision of a Lead Telephone Operator or an employee of higher grade.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Serves as a central answering point for incoming calls; 
  • Determines caller's needs and transfers caller to appropriate extension; 
  • Answers telephone inquiries and provides general information regarding activities of the agency; 
  • Receives and announces visitors and directs them to their destinations; 
  • Uses telephone to locate persons; 
  • Performs general clerical duties such as typing, filing, distribution, and processing of mail, receiving deliveries, etc.; 
  • May staff communications center for agency; 
  • May train relief operators; 
  • Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

  • Knowledge of and ability to operate a PBX telephone switchboard, desk console, or other electronic telephone system; 
  • Skills

  • Ability to
    • speak clearly and distinctly in accordance with acceptable English usage; 
    • follow written and oral instructions; 
    • utilize computer software.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Six (6) months of experience in the operation of electronic telephone systems or as a PBX or telephone company operator.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

One (1) year of experience providing regular periodic relief telephone operator coverage in a state agency may be substituted for the General Experience.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class may be required to work in tiring positions performing repetitious and monotonous tasks for extended periods of time.

In accordance with applicable collective bargaining agreement's compensation guidelines.
