PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Department of Transportation this class is accountable for assisting in the direction of the statewide repair garage field operations and the machine shop in the Office of Maintenance.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Receives general direction from an employee of higher grade.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

Assists in the direction of Transportation Equipment General Supervisors, Transportation Garage Supervisors and provides functional supervision of Department of Transportation personnel engaged in maintenance and operation of equipment.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Assists with the direction of the staff and operations of the statewide repair garage facilities and the machine shop in the Office of Maintenance; 
  • Assists with the coordination, planning and managing of equipment repair activities; 
  • Assists with the formulation of program goals and objectives; 
  • Develops or assists in the development of related policy; 
  • Interprets and administers pertinent laws; 
  • Assists with the evaluation of staff; 
  • Prepares or assists in the preparation of the equipment repair and replacement budget; 
  • Maintains contacts with individuals both within and outside of the program who might impact on program activities; 
  • Prepares reports and correspondence; 
  • Conducts studies of recurring mechanical troubles, new or improved methods of maintaining and repairing equipment or other major equipment problems; 
  • Analyzes needs and makes recommendations for equipment bids; 
  • Performs special tests on new equipment; 
  • Authorizes disposition of obsolete and worn equipment; 
  • Serves as member of accident review board judging accidents in which Department of Transportation employees are involved; 
  • Inspects and makes recommendations on equipment for other state departments and municipalities; 
  • Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

  • Considerable knowledge of the mechanisms and standard methods of repairing and adjusting automotive and highway maintenance equipment; 
  • Knowledge of
    • the design, requirements and capacities of various types of highway maintenance and repair shop equipment; 
    • machine shop operations; 
  • Considerable
    • interpersonal skills; 
    • oral and written communication skills; 
  • Considerable ability to inspect and test new and overhauled equipment, including shop repair equipment, welding and cutting equipment, and standard machine tools; 
  • Ability to utilize computer software; 
  • Supervisory ability.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Three (3) years of experience in a supervisory capacity in a large scale program of automotive or highway equipment maintenance.

NOTE: For state employees this experience is interpreted at the level of a Transportation Garage Supervisor.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents may be exposed to some risk of injury when driving in snowstorms.
