In the Department of Transportation this class is accountable for acting as a lead bridge safety inspector of an inspection team(s), charged with the technical inspection of bridges and related structures in accordance with the National Bridge Inspection Standards promulgated by the United States Department of Transportation.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Receives general direction from a Transportation Engineer 3 or other employee of higher grade who reviews work for completeness, accuracy and adherence to established procedures and standards.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Leads Transportation Bridge Safety Inspectors and Transportation Technicians of lower grade.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
- Serves as lead inspector of an inspection team(s) charged with the technical inspection of bridges and related structures in accordance with the National Bridge Inspection Standards;
- Inspects bridges for corrosion and deterioration in steel beams and girders;
- Evaluates coating condition;
- Makes technical measurements to determine bridge cross-sectional area reduction;
- Inspects concrete beams and girders for spalling, diagonal cracking and flexure (vertical) cracking;
- Inspects abutments, piers and bents for evidence of tilt or settlement as well as corrosion;
- Inspects decks, trusses, bearings, etc., for deterioration and/or corrosion;
- Prepares reports of bridge inspections, including notes and sketches;
- Performs special bridge tests such as Dye Penetrant test and Magnetic Particle test;
- Evaluates extent and seriousness of bridge defects noted during inspections, making on the spot reports as necessary;
- Prepares accurate and complete reports of all bridge inspections;
- Supervises and trains technicians and bridge safety inspectors of lower grade in the techniques, procedures and method of bridge inspection;
- Processes digital photographs and other electronic documents;
- May operate special bridge inspection equipment;
- Performs related duties as required.

- the methods and techniques of technical bridge inspections;
- bridge components, their purposes and interrelationships;
- Knowledge of basic civil engineering principles as applied to bridge construction;
- Skills

- prepare neat and accurate drawings and sketches;
- operate and adjust specialized bridge inspection measurement and detection devices;
- prepare complete and accurate bridge inspection reports;

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE
Five (5) years of bridge safety inspection experience.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED
- For state employees one (1) year of experience as a Transportation Bridge Safety Inspector 2 may be substituted for the General Experience.
- Possession of a Bachelor's degree in engineering or engineering technology from a college or university accredited by or determined as substantially equivalent by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology AND successfully passed the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying Fundamentals of Engineering examination AND two (2) years of bridge safety inspection experience may be substituted for the General Experience.
- Possession of an Associate's degree in engineering or engineering technology from a college or university accredited by or determined as substantially equivalent by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology AND four (4) years of bridge safety inspection experience may be substituted for the General Experience.
- Possession of a Professional Engineer (P.E.) license in the State of Connecticut AND six (6) months of bridge safety inspection experience may be substituted for the General Experience.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Incumbents in this class must possess certification for successful completion of an FHWA (Federal Highway Administration)-approved comprehensive bridge inspection training course at time of appointment.
- The appointing authority may require possession of an appropriate current Connecticut Motor Vehicle Operator's license at time of appointment and during employment in this class.
- Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
In addition to good health, incumbents appointed to positions in this class must have and retain sufficient strength, stamina, agility, and visual and auditory acuity necessary to perform all the duties of the class.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Incumbents in this class may be exposed to considerable danger of injury or physical harm due to falls, traffic, and hazardous fumes and may be exposed to a moderate degree of discomfort from weather conditions.
COMPENSATION GUIDELINES

The classification of Transportation Bridge Safety Inspector 3 is assigned to Salary Group FS 22a.

Employees shall proceed through that salary group and then shall proceed to the maximum salary of the next Salary Group.
