PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Department of Transportation, District Office this class is accountable for supervising the maintenance, repair and installation of electrical systems.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Receives general direction from a Transportation Maintenance Manager or other employee of higher grade.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

Supervises crew leaders, technicians, electricians and laborers.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Schedules, assigns, oversees and reviews the work of staff; 
  • Provides staff training and assistance; 
  • Conducts performance evaluations; 
  • Determines priorities and plans office work; 
  • Establishes and maintains office procedures; 
  • Develops or makes recommendations on the development of policies and standards; 
  • Acts as liaison with other operating units, agencies and outside officials regarding unit policies and procedures; 
  • Prepares reports and correspondence; 
  • Supervises installation and maintenance of highway lighting and traffic installations, machinery and other highway electrical equipment; 
  • Supervises inspection and recommends repairs or replacement of movable bridges, series and multiple street light systems, buildings, commercial type oil burners, transformer substation installations, and electronic control devices; 
  • Prepares annual budget for the district's electrical work; 
  • Prepares cost estimates; 
  • Revises plans and specifications for existing electrical systems; 
  • Ensures that standard practices of department are followed in regard to policy, materials and workmanship; 
  • Makes recommendations on all electrical problems in a district including contractual work, traffic signal problems, and utility relocations; 
  • Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

  • Considerable knowledge of
    • relevant state and federal laws, statutes and regulations;
    • relevant agency policies and procedures; 
    • electrical installation repairs and maintenance of street light system and traffic signals; 
  • Knowledge of the electrical repair of buildings, machinery, transformer substation and electronic control devices; 
  • Considerable
    • interpersonal skills; 
    • oral and written communication skills; 
  • Ability to
    • prepare cost estimates of electrical maintenance work; 
    • utilize computer software; 
  • Supervisory ability.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Six (6) years of experience in the installation, maintenance and repair of electrical systems.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SPECIAL EXPERIENCE

Two (2) years of the General Experience must have been in a lead capacity with responsibility for crews engaged in maintenance or related activities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

College or technical school training may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equalling one-half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of two (2) years for an Associate's degree or for completion of a certified two (2) year technical school course in the field of electrical technology.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class may be exposed to some danger of injury or physical harm from electrical shock.

COMPENSATION GUIDELINES

  • The classification of Transportation District Electrical Supervisor is assigned to Salary Group LS 23a.
  • Employees shall proceed through that salary group and then shall proceed to the maximum salary of Salary Group LS 24.
  • The Job Code is identified as Salary Plan IE in CORE-CT.
