PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In the Department of Transportation, Bureau of Public Transportation this class is accountable for independently performing a full range of tasks in conducting initial and follow up investigations involving complex problems and situations pertaining to rail track facilities throughout the state to ensure compliance with established state and fed eral standards and policies.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the general supervision of an employee of higher grade.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
May lead technical or other lower level employees as assigned.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
- Conducts complex, in depth field inspections to assure conformance to established Federal Railroad Administration standards by all rail companies under state jurisdiction;
- Conducts field inspections to assure conformance of rail construction and maintenance practices to appropriate safety standards;
- Monitors construction and maintenance activities related to track, bridges and buildings, communications and signals and other assigned areas;
- Reports to supervisor on matters involving substandard conformance and assures that remedial action is undertaken;
- Follows up on deficiencies discovered by inspectors of lower grade;
- Recommends revisions in inspection criteria to reflect changes in construction methods and techniques;
- Investigates and resolves complaints from the public, municipalities or other component units within the overall rail structure;
- Inspects railroad grade crossings for compliance with state regulations;
- Inspects construction activities to ensure adherence to optimum safety standards;
- Writes comprehensive reports and conducts special studies as required;
- Provides liaison with federal agencies on track inspections;
- Performs related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE
Five (5) years of experience in railroad maintenance of way operations.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications including certification as a State Railroad Inspector under Federal Railroad Administration track safety standards.
- Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.
- Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Incumbents in this class may be exposed to some danger of injury or physical harm from railroad or construction environments and a moderate degree of discomfort from exposure to year round conditions.
COMPENSATION GUIDELINES
- The classification of Transportation Rail Inspector 2 is assigned to Salary Group FS 19a.
- Employees shall proceed through that salary group and then shall proceed to the maximum salary of Salary Group FS 20.
- The Job Code is identified as Salary Plan FE in CORE-CT.
