PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In the Department of Transportation this class is accountable for receiving training in and performing work of gradually increasing responsibility at the para-professional level in transportation or program planning.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Initially works under the close supervision of a planner, engineer or technician of higher grade; works more independently with acquired experience.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
- Receives generalized training in assisting planners and engineers in the completion of limited assignments relating to development, promotion and coordination of transportation planning programs with local, State or regional planning agencies and other development groups;
- Collects data, conducts surveys and assists in reviewing and analyzing such factors as adequacy of transportation facilities, urban growth, socio-economic changes, population data and environmental concerns;
- Assists in developing and preparing charts, maps, graphs, diagrams and other illustrative materials;
- Prepares simple reports and publications;
- Assists with filing and indexing of library materials and maps;
- May assist in developing estimated costs and project schedules;
- Performs related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE
One (1) year of experience in transportation planning related activities with a recognized transportation or planning agency, consulting firm or similar planning organization.
NOTE: For state employees this experience is interpreted at the level of an Office Assistant or Data Entry Operator 1 assigned to transportation planning activities or Transportation Maintainer 2 assigned to maintenance planning related activities.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.
- Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Incumbents in this class may be exposed to some danger of injury or physical harm from highway, railway or construction environments and a moderate degree of discomfort from exposure to year-round weather conditions.
COMPENSATION GUIDELINES
- The classification of Transportation Planning Assistant 1 is assigned to Salary Group FS 13a.
- Employees shall proceed through that salary group and then shall proceed to the maximum salary of Salary Group FS 14.
- The Job Code is identified as Salary Plan FE in CORE-CT.
