PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In the Department of Motor Vehicles this class is accountable for performing a full range of basic tasks in weighing, inspecting, and checking licenses and registration of commercial vehicles for violations and for operating and maintaining scale equipment.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Initially works under the close supervision of an employee of higher grade; works more independently with acquired experience.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
- Sets up, operates, and maintains portable and semi-portable scales;
- Stops commercial vehicles to verify compliance with state and federal laws, particularly weight and safety requirements;
- Weighs trucks using portable, semi-portable, and fixed scales;
- Measures width and length of trucks;
- Checks registrations for weight violations;
- Inspects vehicles for safety violations including hazardous material;
- Checks for compliance with Department of Revenue Services tax decal requirements;
- Maintains scales and related equipment;
- May escort vehicles to fixed weighing stations;
- Performs related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Any experience or training which provide the knowledge, skills, and ability indicated above.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Incumbents in this class must possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator's license.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Incumbents in this class must have general good health, be free from any disease or injury which would impair health or usefulness and possess and retain sufficient physical strength, stamina, agility, endurance, and visual and auditory acuity to perform all the duties of the class.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Incumbents in this class may be exposed to a considerable amount of physical exertion in inspecting vehicles, to some degree of injury in performing their inspections of heavy vehicles and to moderately disagreeable conditions encountered working outdoors.
