PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station this class is accountable for leading the staff and operations of the Station. In the absence of the Director oversees all activities of and assumes leadership responsibilities for the Station.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Receives administrative direction from the Director.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Directs and evaluates research of scientists within a Station department; directs other staff of the Station.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
- Leads staff and operations of The Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station;
- Coordinates, plans and manages activities of and stimulates research in a field of agricultural science, administers such regulatory laws as required by state statutes and performs unusually complex analyses, examinations or highly original research;
- Advises the Director directly or through Station Council;
- Maintains liaison with state and federal officers under guidance of the Director and with citizens as required by the mission of the Station;
- Designates and assigns staff to research problems;
- Brings to bear unusual distinction and insight in pursuit of research on basic and applied scientific problems;
- Accurately analyzes and interprets results for scientists and the general public;
- Writes papers and articles for peer-reviewed journals;
- Aids colleagues in preparing reports;
- Selects and trains scientists, technicians and office workers;
- Addresses meetings of citizens of the State and answers questions brought by citizens;
- Seeks grants and extramural funding;
- Develops, applies and monitors a departmental grant and extramural funding program;
- Oversees policies and investigates complaints regarding civil rights and research integrity;
- Performs work with high ethics, competence and thoroughness of a proven professional;
- In absence of the Director oversees all activities of and assumes leadership responsibilities for the Station;
- Leads the recruitment and hiring of staff, including outreach, interview and selection;
- Performs related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY
- Has
- a national reputation in a field of scientific research encompassed by the Station;
- published a substantial number of high quality research papers;
- considerable administrative ability in dealing with scientists and the general public;
- Understands
- thoroughly technique and philosophy of experimental science;
- state of scientific arts being investigated at the Station.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE
A Ph.D. or equivalent and ten (10) years of experience in research, and a demonstrated experience and excellence in administration.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Incumbents in this class must possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license.
- Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.
