PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

At the University of Connecticut and Connecticut State Colleges and Universities this class is accountable for acting as a working supervisor for University Research Technicians and other laboratory shop staff engaged in maintaining and developing electrical, electronic and mechanical apparatus and the construction of working models for complex technological and scientific research projects.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Receives general direction from a department head or other employee of higher grade.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

Leads University Research Technicians of lower grade, Qualified Craft Workers and/or other assigned staff, including the responsibility for the training and supervision of students and other researchers using the facility.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Plans shop workflow and determines priorities; 
  • Schedules, assigns, oversees, and reviews work; 
  • Establishes and maintains shop procedures; 
  • Provides staff training and assistance; 
  • Conducts or assists in conducting performance evaluations; 
  • Acts as liaison with operating units, agencies, and outside officials regarding unit policies and procedures; 
  • Supervises the purchase of supplies and equipment; 
  • Controls the maintenance and repair of equipment; 
  • May make recommendations on policies or standards; 
  • May prepare reports and correspondence; 
  • May design or modify experimental equipment to meet needs, arranging for fabrication of special equipment with other college or university facilities; 
  • May compile data and compute costs of conducting a project experiment; 
  • May instruct students and faculty in shop safety; 
  • Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

  • Considerable knowledge of
    • and ability to perform the calibration, operation, maintenance and repair of chemical, electrical, electronic or mechanical equipment; 
    • standard shop practices, scientific equipment and terminology;
  • Knowledge of purchasing procedures; 
  • Skills

  • Considerable ability to
    • fabricate experimental apparatus and to modify existing equipment to specific needs; 
    • plan and execute a testing program suitable for meeting the requirements of an assigned research design; 
    • compute testing costs and compile technical reports; 
  • Ability to utilize computer software; 
  • Supervisory ability.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Six (6) years of technical experience in a laboratory or machine shop involving the design, modification or repair of machinery, chemical, electrical, electronic or mechanical equipment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

College training in the physical sciences, mechanical or electrical engineering or a related field may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equalling one-half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of four (4) years for a Bachelor's degree.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties.
  • A physical examination may be required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents may be exposed to risk of injury from equipment or materials.
