PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Department of Aging and Disability Services, Bureau of Rehabilitation Services this class is accountable for receiving on-the-job training in professional rehabilitation services for individuals with disabilities.

GUIDELINES FOR JOB CLASS USE

This is the apprentice level class responsible for learning and practicing the range of duties in Vocational Rehabilitation and completing required educational qualifications.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the immediate and close supervision of a Vocational Rehabilitation Supervisor or employee of higher grade; works independently with acquired experience.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Receives generalized training in professional rehabilitation planning for and services to individuals with disabilities and rehabilitation needs; 
  • Conducts interviews and explains functions, services and eligibility requirements of the agency; 
  • Counsels individuals and assists in planning, selecting, preparing for and achieving a vocational goal; 
  • Obtains sufficient case information from schools, employers, Social Security Administration and other public and private agencies and medical facilities; 
  • Arranges for services within the agency or other community agencies; 
  • Prepares written reports to document decisions; 
  • Assesses vocational rehabilitation potential; 
  • Establishes community referral sources; 
  • Prepares case histories and other case records as components of an assigned caseload; 
  • Coordinates and delivers presentations; 
  • May administer vocational tests; 
  • Performs related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

A Bachelor's degree and one (1) year of full time employment as a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor Candidate in the Bureau of Rehabilitation Services and matriculation in a graduate course of study leading to a Master's degree in rehabilitation counseling, psychology, special education or related behavioral or social science.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • To obtain the position of Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor 1 within one (1) year incumbents in this class are required to matriculate into a graduate course of study leading to a Master's degree within time frames specified by the Bureau that will meet the educational qualifications for Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor and meet the most current national standard for Certified Rehabilitation Counselor (CRC) as specified by the Commission on Rehabilitation Counselor Certification (CRCC).
  • Incumbents in this class are required to maintain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator's License or Identification Card.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to travel with or without an accommodation.

APPOINTMENT

The term of appointment of a candidate to a position in this class shall be for a maximum period of not more than three (3) years.
