PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Department of Veterans Affairs this class is accountable for independently performing a full range of tasks in order to implement on-going behavioral support programs and rehabilitative interventions designed to increase veterans' level of independence and support short and/or long term goals.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the general supervision of the Director of Residential Programs and Services or other employee of higher grade.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

Leads veterans and veteran workers on an assigned shift.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Assists veterans through their transition to community living;
  • Observes veterans' behavior and guides veterans in assuming responsibility for activities of daily living, developing self-help skills and accepting social and personal responsibility;
  • Communicates and interacts with veterans on problems with daily living;
  • Encourages veterans' participation in programs and activities;
  • Assists veterans in developing effective strategies for managing internal and external stress; records programmatic activities and prepares pertinent reports;
  • Participates in case management team meetings by reporting on observations and providing other relevant information; maintains a safe and healthy living environment;
  • Inspects residence and surrounding area to ensure cleanliness and proper physical condition of facilities;
  • Assists in organizing and leading social and recreational functions;
  • Investigates, acts on and notifies medical or protective service staff of problems;
  • Prepares and submits work orders for repairs of facilities and requisitions for veterans' needs;
  • Performs related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

One (1) year of experience in the physical and behavioral care and needs of residents living in a health care facility or working with veterans in the community.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

College training in a behavioral science, social work, rehabilitation therapy or a related field may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equalling one-half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of one (1) year.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Incumbents in this class must possess physical and emotional health for efficient performance of duties; a physical examination may be required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Incumbents in this class may be required to lift or restrain residents;
  • May be exposed to communicable and/or infectious diseases and risk of injury from assaultive residents.
