THE POSITION
The State of Connecticut, Department of Public Health (DPH), is currently seeking a qualified individual for the position of Connecticut Careers Trainee (CCT) with a target title of Chemist 1.

Individuals with a Bachelor's degree or Master's degree conferred by May 2023 may apply. Candidates cannot be appointed until all degree requirements are complete.

*SALARY INFORMATION
  • Starting Salary with a Bachelor's degree: $45,408
  • Starting Salary with a Master's degree: $47,044

DISCOVER THE OPPORTUNITY TO
  • Train with senior level Chemists and be involved in the analysis of water samples for organic chemical contaminants, specifically Volatile and Semi-Volatile Organic Compounds;
  • Train in the analysis of per-and poly-fluorinated alkyl substances, in support of the recommendations of the CT Interagency PFAS Action Plan; and
  • Learn more about the methods of preparing samples for analysis, such as solid phase extraction and have knowledge of modern analytical instrumentation, for example LC/MS-MS, GC/ECD, GC/MS, ICP/MS and/or LC/MS. 
ABOUT US 
 The Environmental Sciences section tests for over 100 toxic chemical agents in public drinking water supplies, private wells, rivers, lakes, streams, wastewater, spills, and soils. Additionally, this section provides testing services for consumer products and other materials where there is a potential for exposure to hazardous materials such as lead based paint. Other services include monitoring of the nuclear power industry, serving on the State’s nuclear response team including maintaining preparedness and capabilities to respond to radiation emergencies. The section is also designated as the state’s Chemical Emergency Preparedness and Response Laboratory in the event of a hazardous chemical exposure.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In a state agency this class is accountable for mastering the skills necessary to satisfactorily complete the training program for a professional position.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

In a department or institution receives training in introductory governmental work for development of skills and knowledge in field of public administration in order to qualify for advancement into agency professional positions; performs a variety of increasingly difficult duties as skills are acquired during course of training period; performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Oral and written communication skills; ability to acquire knowledge and skills required for the target classification; ability to understand, evaluate and solve problems by exercising judgement and logic; ability to read, interpret and understand written material; ability to perform basic arithmetical computations; ability to interpret charts, graphs and tables; learning and reasoning ability; ability to establish and maintain cooperative relations with superiors, associates and general public; ability to utilize computer software.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Possession of a Bachelor's or Master's degree.

NOTE:

  1. If the target job classification has a Substitution Allowed that requires the Bachelor's or Master's degree to be in a specific area(s), then these specific degree areas are required for appointment to the Connecticut Career Trainee classification.
  2. Candidates cannot be appointed until all degree requirements are complete.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience using laboratory equipment such as pipets, centrifuges, incubators, shakers
  • Experience carrying out laboratory testing using written Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and adherence to Quality Assurance requirements
  • Experience carrying out maintenance procedures and testing procedures using complex laboratory equipment and instrumentation
  • Experience with data analysis and recording of results for laboratory testing procedures
  • Experience using products such as Excel, Word or other programs for generating sample work lists and calculating results
  • Experience communicating in person, on the phone, and in writing
