The Department of Emergency Services & Public Protection, Division of State Police is currently recruiting for the position of State Police Major in multiple locations throughout Connecticut. These positions are full-time and are available to current employees within the Division of State Police.

Since 1903, the Connecticut State Police (CSP) has provided a full range of law enforcement services to the State of Connecticut. The Division of State Police is comprised of three (3) Districts, Western District, Central District, and Eastern District. There are currently 11 troops located throughout the state with State Police troopers providing the primary law enforcement services in 79 of the 169 municipalities in Connecticut. Additionally, the CSP provides major crime, emergency services, cause and origin investigations and traffic and truck enforcement to the entire state.
This announcement will be used to create a pool of candidates to fill future vacancies within DESPP, Division of State Police. In order to be considered for this job opening, you must be a current State of CT employee of the Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection, who has permanent state status*, and meet the Minimum Qualifications as listed on the job opening. You must specify your qualifications on your application. *For employees in the classified service, permanent status is obtained after successful completion of a working test period. For employees in the unclassified service, permanent status is obtained after serving in a position for at least six months (full-time or full-time equivalent).
Selection Process:
The Connecticut State Police promotional process is extensive and follows 3 steps from application to hire.

2) Detailed Resume with Cover Letter: The Detailed Resume should include a summary of the candidates law enforcement (and related) training and experience, formal education, and any supervisory or leadership experience, and will be used to assess the candidate’s preparedness to become a State Police Major. The Detailed Resume and Cover Letter must be submitted to the interview panel on the day of the candidate’s scheduled interview.
3) Oral Interview: All qualifying candidates will be invited to interview for the position of State Police Major. The interview will be conducted by a panel of current Connecticut State Police Personnel. Also considered in this selection process: any pending or disciplinary history within the past 2 years and review of attendance records.

In the Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection, Division of State Police, this class is accountable for administrating major field, staff or support bureau operations.
Administraters staff and operations of major bureaus of division; develops, implements and evaluates operational policies, goals and objectives of division; designs and develops review of bureau activities effecting administrative control and coordination of operations as required; evaluates law enforcement trends and develops progressive administrative policies and procedures to accomplish bureau and division objectives; directs continuing supervision, inspection and training of personnel assigned to command; commands field forces during major emergencies including natural or nuclear disasters, presidential visits and hostage situations; directs administration of all statutory duties as assigned; directs liaison activities with other law enforcement or governmental officials, news media and the general public; makes continuing appraisal of administrative activities and operations and recommends corrective action as necessary; may propose changes in all codes for public health, fire or safety; performs related duties as required.
Considerable knowledge of and ability to apply management principles and techniques; considerable knowledge of relevant agency policies and procedures; considerable knowledge of relevant state and federal laws, statutes, regulations and court decisions; considerable knowledge of principles of modern police administration, organization and management; considerable knowledge of modern police investigative techniques, procedures and aids; considerable interpersonal skills; considerable oral and written communication skills.
One (1) year of experience at or above the level of a State Police Lieutenant.
Incumbents in this class must possess and retain a valid Connecticut Motor Vehicle Operator's license.
Incumbents in this class must possess sufficient strength, stamina, agility and endurance to perform all the duties of the class.
