Position Highlights:
The Canine Unit is responsible for ensuring coverage for all State of Connecticut Correctional Institutions, County Jails, Parole District Offices, and Halfway Houses. At times, the Canine Unit employees are deployed to work in collaboration with local, state and federal law enforcement agencies.
This position is 40 hours per week, first shift, on a 5x2 (Monday to Friday) schedule.
In accordance with the requirements outlined in Administrative Directive 6.11 Canine Unit, candidates must:
- Satisfactorily have completed two (2) years of service as a Canine Handler;
- Maintain canine certification while assigned to the Canine Unit.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In the Department of Correction this class is accountable for either supervising correctional staff engaged in custodial work or for performing specialized assignments.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
The Canine Unit Training Lieutenant shall have the authority to
direct and oversee all canine handlers and equipment assigned to the Canine
Unit. The duties of the Canine Unit Training Supervisor shall include, but are
not limited to, the following:
1. Shall be designated as the Department of Correction's liaison/K9 Training
Intructor to the Connecticut State Police K-9 Unit who coordinates and oversees
all canine handler/canine training;
2.
Shall be qualified to accomplish all
canine training techniques in accordance with N.E.S.P.A.C. training standards;
3.Oversee and provide instruction to all K-9 Officers while they attend the CT
State Police K-9 Unit Academies for different K9-related disciplines (Patrol,
Narcotic, ESD classes, etc.);
4. Evaluate and procure candidate canines for new handlers or as replacements
for retiring canines;
5. Implement and coordinate up-to-date training curriculum in-line with current
K9 Training methodologies and practices;
6. Assist with different CT State Police K-9 Unit in-services as necessary;
7. Ensure that all applicable Administrative Directives, Unit Directives and
Post Orders are complied with by canine handlers;
8. Review and take appropriate action, as needed, regarding kennel operations,
incidents, kennel cleanliness and any other issues pertaining to canine handler
responsibilities;
9. Provide coverage within his/her District in the absence of available Canine
Handlers; and,
10. Be subject to the authority of the Director of Tactical Operations or
designee.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY
Considerable knowledge of modern correctional methods and practices; knowledge of policies and procedures utilized in correctional facilities; knowledge of the appropriate methods of discipline applied to inmates; considerable interpersonal skills; considerable oral and written communication skills; ability to accurately evaluate situations and make effective administrative and supervisory decisions; ability to utilize computer software; supervisory ability.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE
Four (4) years of experience in correctional work.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED
College training in corrections, behavioral sciences or criminal justice may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equalling one half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of one (1) year.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
1. Incumbents in this class are required to possess a high school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) certification.
2. Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator's license, a Commercial Driver's License, or both.
CHARACTER REQUIREMENTS
In addition to the checking of references and of facts stated in the application, a thorough background investigation of each candidate may be made before persons are certified for appointment.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
1. Incumbents in this class must have general good health, be free from any disease or injury which would impair health or usefulness and possess and retain sufficient physical strength, stamina, agility, endurance and visual and auditory acuity required to perform all the duties of the class.
2. A comprehensive medical examination, including a controlled substance screening, may be required of applicants.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Incumbents in this class may be exposed to a considerable danger of injury or assault by inmates.
