The State of Connecticut, Connecticut State Library (CSLhas one (1) available opportunity for a Library Specialist in the Cataloging Unit at CSL’s main facility in Hartford, Connecticut. CSL is an Executive Branch agency founded in 1854. CSL provides a variety of library, information, archival, public records, museum, and administrative services for citizens of Connecticut, as well as for the employees and officials of all three branches of State government. CSL also serves students, libraries, researchers, and town governments. The Cataloging Unit provides high quality original and derivative cataloging records in support of these services and regularly contributes holdings to authoritative international databases through its participation in the NACO and CONSER programs administered by the Library of Congress. CSL is a primary participant in the Connecticut State Colleges and Universities (CSCU) Library Consortium, through which auspices CSL uses the ExLibris Alma library management system and Primo patron discovery platform.

Position Highlights: 

Under the general supervision of the Cataloging Unit Head, and in collaboration with other members of the Cataloging Unit and other State Library staff, the Library Specialist is responsible for creating and maintaining the catalog of the Library’s collection, with a specialty in cataloging official publications of Connecticut State Government agencies.

The Library Specialist is responsible for coordinating and substantially contributing bibliographic records to two PCC programs: CONSER (the Cooperative Online Serials Program), and NACO (Name Authority Cooperative Program), and the Connecticut NACO funnel group.

*Create and maintain high quality cataloging records conforming to international standards. Principal duty is original cataloging of publications of Connecticut state governmental agencies. Additional cataloging assignments may include such areas as law materials and Connecticut history materials. Bibliographic formats include print and online monographs, serials, and other continuing resources such as government agency websites.  

*Contribute authority records to NACO databases, specializing in names of Connecticut governmental units as encountered in the original cataloging of their publications.

*Coordinate Connecticut NACO funnel: Recruit participants and arrange training sessions. Disseminate information and correspondence to members. Review NACO database contributions from State Library cataloging unit and from other funnel catalogers statewide. 

*Coordinate CONSER participation and assume a leadership role in resolving complex serials related problems.

Position Details:

  • Schedule: Full-time position; 40 hours per week; Monday through Friday. 
  • Location: Connecticut State Library, 231 Capitol Avenue, Hartford, CT 06107
  • Work setting: Telework available. Current option typically provides for 50% telework per two-week pay period.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the State Library, this class is accountable for performing as a specialist within a particular field and/or providing the highest advanced level of professional library tasks in management services, patron services, library services and historical services.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Performs most complex related duties in providing consultant services to public, institutional and agency libraries and library groups; coordinates activities of a documents depository system; answers most complex queries utilizing wide range of reference tools of a highly specialized and complex nature; performs genealogical and legal legislative research; provides staff training and assistance; provides information referrals for legal, historical, genealogical and other special subject researchers; performs original cataloging and name authority work for most complex materials including law, microforms and serials; appraises materials to determine archival value and suitability for inclusion in State Archives; performs original accessioning and authority work on finding aids for archival materials; designs and revises automated and traditional archival aids: verifies for accuracy revisions to library catalogs; reviews and revises classification and authority work of other staff; may be assigned to staff development projects; may conduct performance evaluations; may conduct workshops; may serve as liaison to groups and organizations; may be assigned to special projects requiring highest advanced level professional library duties as directed by State Librarian; performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Considerable knowledge of professional principles and practices of library science and/or bibliographic sources of information; considerable knowledge of and demonstrated ability in specialized functional procedures and/or specialized subject matter; considerable knowledge of library administration principles and techniques and library automation; considerable interpersonal skills; considerable oral and written communication skills; ability to analyze and solve complex problems relating to library methods and procedures; ability to utilize computer software; some supervisory ability.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

A Master's degree in library science or information science from a library school accredited by the American Library Association AND three (3) years of post graduate degree experience in a relevant area of professional library work.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience in original serials cataloging at the Cooperative Online Serials Program (CONSER) level.
  • Experience in contributing records to the Name Authority Cooperative Program (NACO) project.
  • Experience in applying international cataloging standards and classification practices.
  • Experience using Ex Libris Alma system and Primo discovery interface.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

The State Librarian may determine other advanced educational degrees equivalent to the MLS degree based on staffing needs.
