The State of Connecticut, Department of Administrative Services (DAS), is now accepting applications for multiple Human Resources Generalist 2 opportunities to be deployed within the Department of Correction (DOC). These full-time 40 hours/week, Monday-Friday, opportunities are in Wethersfield, CT with flexible hours and telework options available. If you’re seeking the professional challenge of your life and an opportunity to serve your State in a way that is rewarding and fulfilling this could be the role you’ve been searching for!

The DOC can be a difficult and often thankless place to work however it is simultaneously rewarding and stimulating.  Those who serve our State inside of the DOC do difficult but critical work, they are special, devoted and committed public servants.  The HR team supporting the DOC has the honor of bringing these special people in and helping them work as a well-oiled machine. This role is essential, it is this dedicated group of HR professionals that keep the people that we serve, their community and their colleagues safe every day.

DOC professionals work tirelessly 24 hours a day, seven days a week to make sure that the individuals in our care are safe and are receiving critical services and support to aid in their rehabilitation. The work to hire and support these individuals is challenging and rewarding. The HR team has the same dedication and commitment to the mission of our agency, and we know that failure to execute is not an option when public safety is in the balance. The DOC is much more than our core of dedicated corrections officers; corrections is more like managing a small city.  Inside corrections we have a tremendous variety of professionals that support the mission of the agency. Within DOC you will find:

  • A full range of medical services and professionals.
  • Counselors and social workers across multiple disciplines and specialties.
  • Chaplains of every denomination.
  • Internal industries including manufacturing and printing operations.
  • An enterprise spanning transportation system.
  • Kitchens and dining services to support about 10,000 people.
  • Maintenance and engineering services that span nearly every trade.
  • Full spectrum administrative support including financial services, information technology, etc.
  • The largest public school district in the State of Connecticut.
  • The most dedicated managers and leaders that can be found in public service; and that is only scratching the surface.
As an HR professional at the DOC you will play a key role in the engagement and support of this tremendous group of about 6,000 correctional professionals.  While the sheer size and scope of the agency may be daunting, that breadth provides tremendous opportunity for HR professional growth.  There is little in the world of HR that you will not encounter on a regular basis at the DOC.  We have HR team members focused on our staffing activities across many different facets of the organization, some highly specialized, others more high-volume; we have HR professionals focused more on business partner operations with our wardens and administrators.  Our size is our strength when it comes to developing our HR team. While this opportunity is not for everyone, if you are looking for an organization that has endless challenges, tremendous opportunity and a mission and purpose like few others, you may be one of those special HR professionals for whom the DOC is a perfect fit.

Read below to see what current HR staff at the DOC have to say about their amazing work!

"I began my career in 1990 in Human Resources for the Department of Corrections.  I truly believe this was the best decision I ever made in regards to my career path, as well as the number of opportunities for growth that it has afforded me over the years, including my current job title, Human Resources Generalist working in our Recruitment Unit as a Staffing Specialist. Working for the State has provided me with a number of great benefits including excellent health insurance which has been invaluable for myself as well as my family.

Being in a large agency there are a number of options working in HR that may not be afforded in smaller agencies.  You can work as a HR Business Partner with a specific Correctional Facility, assisting the staff with their HR issues.  You can work as a Staffing Specialist filling DOC vacancies or you can work with some of our larger functions such as the Correctional Officer process or with our Health Services Unit.

The DOC is like its own city that will keep your work exciting and rewarding, no matter which area you choose to work in, this is one of the reasons I chose to come back and work for the DOC as I recently had the opportunity to work at a different state agency for a short time." Erica McGuinness- Human Resources Staffing Generalist

“I have been part of the DOC HR family for over 37 years. One of the reasons I’ve remained with the DOC team is because it is a challenging but rewarding agency. We are unique because we manage 24-7 operations with over 10 bargaining units. Now for some, this may be a bit overwhelming but if you're like me and like to be challenged then the DOC can be for you too.  I often say if you can make it here, you can make it anywhere - this is a proven fact as many other agency leaders began their careers at the DOC.  I have personally seen co-workers transfer out to other agencies and return because we are more than just a team, we are family!” Edna Desormiers- Human Resources Generalist
