Primary work schedule is Monday to Friday up to 40 hours per week on first shift, with flexible schedules and teleworking considered. As a Seasonal Resource Assistant, you will be working in the Forest Protection Program under direction of the Forest Protection Supervisor. This position may also require working in both the Western and Eastern Districts and statewide.
Position length is 1,040 hours, not to exceed 1 year.
ROLE HIGHLIGHTS
As a Seasonal Resource Assistant in the Forestry Division, you will be assisting the Fire Supervisor and Forest Protection Staff in programmatic responsibilities to include but not limited to:
- Collecting, compiling and reporting wildfire statistics data,
- Conducting inventory of program fire equipment,
- Providing administrative support to the Connecticut Interstate Fire Crew, the Dry Hydrant grant program and the Volunteer Fire Assistance grant program as needed,
- Other programmatic duties as directed.
Additionally, if interested and qualified, there may be opportunities for wildland fire suppression and prescribed burn experience along with limited opportunities for wildland fire training.

To advance the health, use, conservation, and appreciation of Connecticut's forest resource.
We are a part of the Bureau of Natural Resources within the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP). The Bureau is charged with managing the State’s natural resources (particularly fish, wildlife, and forests) through a program of research, management, public education, and regulation. The Forestry Division is comprised of several important programs that work together to conserve and manage forests.
Connecticut's state foresters and their partners protect our forest resources by:
- Encouraging private land owners to practice responsible long-term forest management (private landowners own 73% of Connecticut's forest, with more than two-thirds of that owned by families or individuals),
- Protecting Connecticut's forest resources from the effects of fire, insects, disease, and misuse,
- Providing accurate and timely information about Connecticut's forest resources,
- Certifying forest practitioners,
- Managing the State Forests, in which exist many large blocks of unfragmented forest land,
- Engaging municipalities and citizens in the work of urban forestry, and
- Promoting the local forest industry.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, as a limited duration employee, performs one or more of a variety of tasks and assigned duties of a seasonal nature.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Assists in conducting surveys and experiments in the field and forests; performs a variety of entry level clerical duties; performs lower level/general maintenance duties; performs related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY
Ability to follow instructions.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience working with Microsoft Excel, Access and PowerPoint,
- Experience working with GIS Arc Map.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
1. Incumbents in this class who are assigned as supervisors of small recreational units will perform emergency first aid as needed and will be required to obtain and retain a Basic First Aid Certificate.
2. Incumbents in this class may be required for certain positions to meet any of the following:
a. Proof of possession of a valid Motor Vehicle Operator license.
b. Possession of a valid license to apply pesticides.
c. College training in a specific field.
d. Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification may be required by specific State facilities.
3. Incumbents performing lifeguard services must have and retain an American Red Cross (ARC) Lifeguarding Certification (includes CPR for the Professional Rescuer and Basic First Aid). An EMT or MRT certification may be substituted for the CPR and First Aid requirements.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
1. Incumbents in this class must possess and maintain adequate physical strength and stamina to perform the duties of the class.
2. Incumbents performing lifeguard services must be able to demonstrate American Red Cross (ARC) waterfront lifeguarding swimming skills.
