Are you looking to help protect Connecticut's beautiful aquatic landscape? If so, we have a unique seasonal opportunity for you!

The State of Connecticut, Department of Energy and Enviromental Protection (DEEP), Fisheries Division is seeking to hire (2) Environmental Protection Seasonal Resource Assistants to serve as Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) Stewards. In recent years, hydrilla and other AIS have become increasingly abundant within the Connecticut River. If left unchecked, AIS have the potential to displace native species as well as impact habitat quality, navigation, recreational opportunities, and property values. AIS Stewards will play a critical role in increasing public awareness about and preventing the spread of these species both within the Connecticut River and to other waters through education and outreach.

The duty station of these positions is the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) Marine Headquarters located at 333 Ferry Road in Old Lyme, Connecticut, however, the job duties are field-oriented, and AIS Stewards will be stationed at public boat launches along the Connecticut River.

POSITION HIGHLIGHTS (SEE DETAILS IN EXAMPLES OF DUTIES)

As a Seasonal Resource Assistant in the Fisheries Division, you will be assisting our DEEP Staff with work at the Marine Headquarters in programmatic responsibilities of the position.

Schedule: Primarily first shift but adjustments may be made to match peak boat launch activity and work on weekends and Holidays may be required.

Anticipated Duration: Approximately six (6) months and no more than 1,040 hours.

Salary: Depends on relevant education and/or experience. There are no benefits with this position.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, as a limited duration employee, performs one or more of a variety of tasks and assigned duties of a seasonal nature.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Interacting with and educating boaters at boat launches along the Connecticut River about aquatic invasive species and clean boating practices. Perform voluntary inspections of boats and trailers as they enter and exit boat launch areas to check for and remove aquatic invasive plants and animals. Assisting with public outreach events, as needed; Other duties, as assigned. AIS Stewards will receive training in all of the duties listed above.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Ability to follow instructions.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Experience working with aquatic invasive species;
College level course work and/or experience in one or more of the following: aquatic biology, limnology, water quality monitoring, ecology, botany, environmental science, or a related field;
Experience with boating;
Experience communicating with a variety of constituents over the phone, by email or in-person;
Possession of Connecticut Safe Boating Certificate or Certificate of Personal Watercraft Operation.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Incumbents in this class who are assigned as supervisors of small recreational units will perform emergency first aid as needed and will be required to obtain and retain a Basic First Aid Certificate.

2. Incumbents in this class may be required for certain positions to meet any of the following:

a. Proof of possession of a valid Motor Vehicle Operator license.

b. Possession of a valid license to apply pesticides.

c. College training in a specific field.

d. Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification may be required by specific State facilities.

3. Incumbents performing lifeguard services must have and retain an American Red Cross (ARC) Lifeguarding Certification (includes CPR for the Professional Rescuer and Basic First Aid). An EMT or MRT certification may be substituted for the CPR and First Aid requirements.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Incumbents in this class must possess and maintain adequate physical strength and stamina to perform the duties of the class.

2. Incumbents performing lifeguard services must be able to demonstrate American Red Cross (ARC) waterfront lifeguarding swimming skills.
