The Department of Emergency Services & Public Protection (DESPP), Division of State Police is currently recruiting for the position of State Police Major in multiple locations throughout Connecticut. Individuals promoted to the rank of State Police Major will have the opportunity to administer staff and operations of major bureaus while overseeing all assigned police and civilian personnel within the assigned bureau.

Since 1903, the Connecticut State Police (CSP) has provided a full range of law enforcement services to the State of Connecticut.  The Division of State Police is comprised of three (3) Districts; Western, Central and Eastern.  There are currently eleven (11)  troops located throughout the state  with State Police sworn members providing primary law enforcement services in 79 of the 169 municipalities in Connecticut.   Additionally, the CSP provides major crime, emergency services, cause and origin investigations and traffic and truck enforcement to the entire state.  

This announcement will be used to create a pool of candidates to full future vacancies within DESPP, Division of State Police.  To be considered for these opportunities at any location to the class of State Police Major, you must submit a complete application through JobAps before the closing date.  Permanent assignment to any of these vacancies are subject to all mandatory requirements..

Selection Plan

In order to be considered for this job opening, you must be a current State of Connecticut employee of the Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection (DESPP)who by February 28, 2023 has at least six (6) months of full-time service of full-time equivalent services, absent any applicable collective bargaining language, and meet the Minimum Qualifications as listed on on the job opening. You must specify your qualifications on your application.

Selection Process

Interested candidates must successfully submit their application to the State of Connecticut within the filing period to be considered for hire.

Candidate Orientation Session: This session is designed to familiarize eligible candidates and provide an overview of the testing components that are the focus and basis of the examination process. Candidates will have the opportunity to ask questions at the end of the session.

Examination Components:  Qualified applicants must participate in all parts of the examination to receive a final score on the examination.

Assessment Center Exercise(s) 100%


Assessment Center: This is a standardized tool for evaluating behavior through a series of exercises that simulate real-life job tasks or situations. Candidate's responses to the exercises are evaluated by trained assessors who observe, record, classify and score the candidates observable behaviors against valid and objective scoring criteria. An example of an exercise candidates may partake in is:

Critical Incident - this type of exercise is designed to assess one's ability and readiness to take command of and run an emergency scene or tactical situation. Candidates are given scenarios/problems to which they must respond.  

The Assessment Center is anticipated to be held in April 2023.  Additional information regarding the assessment center and its schedule will be provided via email and at the candidate orientation session.  Please continue to monitor your email including your spam/junk folder and personal status board in JobAps for further communication regarding the scheduling of the assessment center. 

There will be no make-up assessment center except in very rare situations, where an applicant has a legitimate reason for not attending the regularly scheduled assessment center such as active military duty, serious illness or injury, death in the immediate family, or an accident the day of the assessment center.  Documentation will be required (e.g., military orders, medical certification, police report, etc.) prior to the date of the assessment center, except in critical situations occurring the day of the assessment center.  For those critical situations occurring the day of the assessment center, documentation will be required by close of business the first business day following the assessment center.  DAS has final authority to approve or deny all make-up requests.

Certified List: Upon conclusion of the assessment center, the Department of Administrative Services will certify an eligible list in order of ranked score.

    PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

    In the Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection, Division of State Police this class is accountable for administering the programs of major field, staff or support bureau operations.

    EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

    • Administers staff and operations of major bureaus of the Division of State Police;
    • Develops, implements and evaluates operational policies, goals and objectives of division; 
    • Designs and develops review of bureau activities affecting administrative control and coordination of operations as required;
    • Evaluates law enforcement trends and develops progressive administrative policies and procedures to accomplish bureau and division objectives; 
    • Directs continuing supervision, inspection and training of personnel assigned to command; 
    • Commands field forces during major emergencies including natural or nuclear disasters, presidential visits and hostage situations; 
    • Directs administration of all statutory duties as assigned; 
    • Directs liaison activities with other law enforcement or governmental officials, news media and the general public; 
    • Makes continuing appraisal of administrative activities and operations and recommends corrective action as necessary; 
    • Leads the recruitment and hiring of staff, including outreach, interview and selection;
    • May propose changes in all codes for public health, fire or safety;
    • Performs related duties as required.

      MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

      One (1) year of experience at or above the level of a State Police Lieutenant.

      SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

      Incumbents in this class must possess and retain a valid Connecticut Motor Vehicle Operator's license.

      PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

      Incumbents in this class must possess sufficient strength, stamina, agility and endurance to perform all the duties of the class.
