The State of Connecticut, Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP), Materials Management and Compliance Assurance (MMCA) Engineering and Enforcement Division/Pesticide Management Program (PMP), has two vacancies available for Environmental Trainees to join our team.

This is a one to three-year training classification and upon successful completion of the training period, the incumbents will be promoted to an Environmental Analyst 1.

*Salary Note: During the first year of training, Environmental Trainees with a Bachelor's degree earn $47,229 per year, and Environmental Trainees with a Master's degree earn $48,933 per year.

Position Highlights
  • These full-time positions are located at DEEP Headquarters in Hartford, CT.
  • The schedule is 35 hours per week, Monday to Friday. Typical hours will be 8:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. or 8:30 A.M. to 4:30 P.M. with a possible flex schedule upon completion of the working test period. 
  • The two vacancies available vary in daily responsibility. You may discover the opportunity to join the MMCA in one of the following positions:
    • A field position to conduct investigative and compliance inspections of businesses that use and sell pesticides including landscapers, exterminators, farms and various marketplace environments; or
    • An office/administrative position responsible for administering exams for pesticide certifications, registration of restricted-use pesticide dealers, providing and approving continuing education training.

The Pesticide Management Program (PMP) is responsible for conducting compliance and investigative inspections, certification of pesticide applicators and arborists, pesticide product registration, aerial and aquatic permitting and enforcement of pesticide and arboriculture laws.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In a state agency receives training in introductory professional environmental work for the development of technical and professional skills and knowledge in order to qualify for advancement to the professional environmental work of the agency; performs a wide variety of increasing difficult duties as technical skills are acquired during the course of the training period.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Candidates must be able to meet the experience and training requirements of the designated job class at the completion of the development program. 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience prioritizing and tracking activities or projects; 
  • Experience or training interpreting and applying state and federal laws, statutes, and regulations including Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA), the federal Worker Protection Standard (WPS) for agricultural establishments, Connecticut’s Pesticide Control Act and state arborist laws; 
  • Experience in problem solving, critical thinking and conflict resolution;
  • Experience or training writing narrative reports, completing and organizing forms following prescribed formats; 
  • Experience or training with oral and written communication of technical information;
  • Experience or training in entomology, horticulture; silviculture; limnology; plant pathology; occupational health, or chemistry;
  • Experience or training in multi-media sample collection and protocols.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class may be exposed to some danger of injury or physical harm from on site environments and moderate degree of discomfort from exposure to year round weather conditions.
