At the State of Connecticut, Department of Developmental Services (DDS) – South Region and Southbury Region we currently have eight (8) part-time and full-time seasonal job opportunities for Maintainer positions at Camp Harkness located in Waterford, CT and Southbury, CT.

Your role as a Maintainer
The incumbents will perform grounds keeping duties including cleaning and restocking lavatories, lawn care, trash collection and removal, light repairs, set-up and removal of materials for Camp activities and will assist Facility Maintenance with basic plumbing, electric and carpentry.

  • Location: Camp Harkness located in Waterford, CT.  
  • Hours: 20.0 and 37.50 hours per week  
  • 141948: Sunday 9:00 am - 5:00 pm, Monday 7:00 am - 3:00 pm, Tuesday 7:00am - 12:00pm. Days Off: Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday
  • 141949: Thursday 7:00 am - 12:00 pm, Friday 7:00 am - 3:00 pm, Saturday 9:00 am - 5:00pm. Days Off: Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday 
  • 141950: Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday 7:00 am - 3:00 pm, Wednesday 9:00 am - 5:00 pm. Days Off: Friday and Saturday
  • 141951: Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday 7:00 am - 3:30 pm, Monday 9:00am - 5:00 pm. Days Off: Friday and Saturday  
  • 141952: Tuesday 9:00 am - 5:00 pm, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday 7:00 am - 3:00 pm. Days Off: Monday and Sunday
  • 141953: Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday 7:00 am - 3:00 pm, Thursday 9:00 am - 5:00 pm. Days Off: Sunday and Monday

Southbury Information
  • Location: Southbury Training School located in Southbury, CT.                                                        
  • 116270: Monday - Friday 7:15 am - 3:15 pm. Days Off: Saturday and Sunday
  • 116275: Monday - Friday 7:15 am - 3:15 pm. Days Off: Saturday and Sunday
  • Duration: This is a seasonal position begins May 2, 2023and will end no later than October 31, 2024 
Other information
  • Salary: $20.55 per hour   
  • There are no benefits with this position
  • Must be at least 18 years old as of April 19, 2024
  • Applicants must be able to work for the full season and must complete all required DDS training
  • Selected candidates must possess and maintain adequate physical flexibility, strength and stamina to perform the duties (work outside in all kinds of weather, work outside for extended periods), and work well with other staff and campers
  • Incumbent must possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle license
  • These are seasonal positions and DDS permanent employees will not be considered for these positions
Camp Harnkess
Camp Harkness is located in Southeastern Connecticut on the shores of Long Island Sound. The 102-acre property in Waterford CT is comprised of open and wooded land and includes tidal marsh and beachfront. Facilities at Camp Harkness include year-round and seasonal cabins, year-round cottages, seasonal tent sites, barnyard animals, picnic pavilions & grills, accessible playscape, scenic walkway and overlook, bathhouse, beach with seasonal boardwalk, gardens, dining hall, lodge, and infirmary. Camp Harkness is owned by the State of Connecticut and managed by the Department of Developmental Services.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In a state agency this class is accountable for performing basic tasks of an unskilled nature (e.g. requiring little prior experience or training; most tasks can be learned quickly on the job) in one or several of the following areas:

  • Building and equipment maintenance (operational and remedial);
  • Grounds care;
  • Food services;
  • Operation of trucks of less than five (5) ton capacity;
  • Parking garage.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

  • Skills

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Any experience and training which provide the knowledge, skills and abilities listed above.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preference will be given to candidates who possess the following:
  • Experience operating a wide variety of grounds maintenance machinery and equipment (commercial mowers, tractors, string trimmers, blowers etc.)
  • Previous  maintenance and grounds keeping  experience
  • Previous basic plumbing, electric and carpentry experience
  • Experience working with or volunteering with people with disabilities
  • Previous experience  working in a camp, park, or other recreational setting
  • Experience operating a wide variety of grounds maintenance machinery and equipment (commercial mowers, backhoe, string, trimmers, blowers etc.)

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility, visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties of the class.
  • A physical examination may be required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Incumbents in this class may be required to lift moderate to heavy weights and may be exposed to extreme weather conditions and risk of injury from equipment and assaultive and/or abusive patients and/or clients.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to complete an asbestos removal program consistent with EPA guidelines for operations and maintenance during employment in this class. Incumbents may be required to use protective equipment such as respirators and safety goggles.
