Introduction
Are you an engineering student, graduate, or possess experience in Engineering, and interested in learning what it's like to work as an engineer with the Connecticut Department of Energy & Environmental Protection?
As a Engineering Summer Worker, you will be exposed to a variety of engineering tasks in the field of water resources. You will have an opportunity to see firsthand what it's like to be a Civil or Environmental Engineer at the DEEP.
These temporary positions are full time on first shift, 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, and are anticipated to start May 2024 and end by August 31, 2024.
All candidates applying for consideration should have:
- A valid Driver's License to drive state vehicles to and from field/construction sites and town meetings.
- The ability to use GIS (Geographic Information System) and other related computer applications.
In addition, any students applying should have:
- Completed their Sophomore year if enrolled in a college engineering program.

POSITION HIGHLIGHTS
- Reviewing basic design plans;
- Performing mathematical computations and calculations;
- Collecting, entering, and/or analyzing data;
- Accompanying engineers on field reviews;
- Assisting in construction inspection activities, assisting with the preparation of reports;
- Performing other related duties as required.
After an exciting summer of experience at the DEEP, as a Summer Worker, you may decide that you want to apply for Engineer Trainee positions, when you are ready to graduate! An Engineer Trainee is DEEP's entry-level engineering position and requires a Bachelor's degree in civil engineering, environmental engineering, or other acceptable experience to meet the Target Class of a Civil/Environmental Engineer 1.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In a state agency this class performs tasks and duties of a seasonal nature by providing services to clients or the public.
Minimum and maximum hourly rates will be subject to the following criteria:
- Returning Seasonal Workers may receive $.50 an hour additional compensation for each season of service up to the maximum hourly rate.
OR
- Experienced workers in the specific functional area with another employer may be credited with such time on an equivalent basis to seasons worked and granted the same additional compensation up to the maximum hourly rate.
OR
- Undergraduate or graduate students may be granted additional compensation of up to $.50 more per hour (up to the maximum hourly rate) for each full year of completed education on the basis of 30 semester hours equaling one (1) year.
NOTE: Determination of hourly rate is based on the above criteria. Additional compensation is based on only one criteria. It is not intended for individuals to receive additional compensation through application of the multiple criteria listed above.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Land and Water Resources Division
Assist senior level staff with conducting:
- Site assessments for proposed land-use development projects that are seeking authorization from DEEP for a regulated activity pertaining to wetlands, watercourses, floodplains and/ or Long Island Sound.
- Technical reviews of engineering investigations pertaining to the hydraulic and hydrologic characteristics of floodplains in relation to impacts from proposed infrastructure projects such as bridges and culverts.
- Site inspections of active construction sites to verify compliance with approved permits and assess proposed modifications to construction methodologies including impacts to wetlands, coastal resources, sediment and erosion potential and water quality impacts.
- Field investigations in identifying the number, location of and condition of tide gates that are located along Connecticut’s Coastline.
Water Planning and Management Division
Assist senior level staff with conducting:
- Reviews of technical or environmental reports for infrastructure projects related to municipal wastewater systems and dams regulated and authorized by the Department.
- Technical reviews of engineering reports and plans/specifications to treatment systems for municipal wastewater discharges, the hydraulic and hydrologic characteristics of dams to ensure protection of human health, safety, and the environment.
- Site/field inspections of wastewater treatment facilities and dams to verify compliance with applicable permits and requirements.
- Streamline data collection, reporting processes, including developing guidance to the regulated community of new/streamlined processes.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Any experience and training that could reasonably be expected to provide the knowledge, skills and abilities listed above.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Academic history that demonstrates an interest in the civil engineering or environmental engineering fields;
- Grade point average of 3.0 or higher in engineering courses;
- Experience using specific engineering-related computer software;
- Experience presenting to a diverse group of people;
- Experience or course work performing basic engineering tasks.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Incumbents in this class assigned to recreational activities must be able to perform emergency first aid as needed and certain positions will require a current Standard First Aid Certificate.
- Incumbents in this class assigned as bus drivers or operate a motor vehicle must possess and retain a current Connecticut Motor Vehicle Operator License to drive a bus and/or a Motor Vehicle Operators License as necessary.
- Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.
