The State of Connecticut, State Department of Education is seeking an Education Staff Assistant to facilitate the work of the newly formed Connecticut Educator Preparation and Certification Board within the Commissioner’s Office.

The Role: 
Our ideal candidate will have experience in office administration and knowledge of state laws pertaining to certification and educator preparation programs.

The selected candidate will:
  • Coordinate the establishment of a 16-member board.
  • Provide support to the establish the Board bylaws.
  • Draft agendas and prepare meeting minutes.
  • Coordinate meetings and public comment.
  • Collaboratively work with liaison to the State Board of Education.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Department of Education assists the Secretary, State Board of Education in the performance of special assignments in matters pertaining to educational policy and other State Board responsibilities.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Acts as an executive assistant to the Secretary, State Board of Education;
  • Prepares policy materials for presentation to the State Board of Education;
  • Participates in the planning of educational goals and strategies;
  • Coordinates the dissemination of information to interested parties;
  • Assists in the organization and staffing of units of the Department;
  • Prepares reports on matters of concern to the State Board of Education as required;
  • Performs research projects as directed;
  • Participates in the recruitment and hiring of staff, including outreach, interview and selection;
  • May assist in developing the State Board of Education agenda;
  • May work with representatives of the state, federal, local and legislative agencies on educational matters;
  • Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

  • Knowledge of
    • basic philosophy of education;
    • organizational behavior and planning;
  • Considerable oral and written communication skills;
  • Ability to
    • plan educational policy;
    • prepare comprehensive reports;
    • develop and maintain cooperative working relationships;
  • Administrative ability.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Demonstrated competence to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position as determined by the State Board of Education.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in Political Science or a Law degree.  
  • Experience with state laws pertaining to certification and teacher preparation.
  • Experience coordinating public meetings. 
  • Experience drafting agendas, preparing meeting minutes.
  • Experience with Robert’s Rules of Order.
  • Experience with general office administration.
  • Experience managing competing priorities of a voting board.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Incumbents in this class must hold an appropriate certificate issued by the State Board of Education.
