Position highlights
As a Special Education School Teacher with DOC's Unified School District #1 you will:
- Actively participate and/or facilitate the PPT process and provide data on annual goals and objectives;
- Participate with transition planning;
- Prioritize safety and security as it pertains to all staff, victims, citizens, and offenders;
- Teach early intervention, elementary, secondary, Special subject and/or Special Education curricula;
- Develop educational plans for individuals and groups;
- Set short- and long-term meetings and case review conferences to assess student behavior;
- Participate in planning team meetings and case review conferences to assess student behavior;
- Hold conferences with parents or officials concerned with student performance;
- Relate to professionals in ancillary educational roles;
- Maintain student records and writing reports;
- Model best teaching practices.
This is a full-time position, Monday-Friday, 35 hours.
Candidates are required to possess one of the following CT Teaching Endorsements:
- 065, Comprehensive Special Education, PK-12
- 165, Comprehensive Special Education, PreK-12
- 265, Comprehensive Special Education, 1-12

About us
The DOC Unified School District #1 is dedicated to providing quality educational programs for incarcerated individuals. Academic knowledge, vocational competencies and life skills integrated with technology are offered to students in a positive environment to foster lifelong learning, multicultural awareness and a successful transition to society.
The Manson Youth Institution is a level 4 high-security facility. It serves as the Department's primary location for housing sentenced inmates under the age of 21. Recognizing the need to educate youth, staff provide a climate, which enhances inmate social skills, while reinforcing ethics, attitude and behavior valued by productive law-abiding citizens.
The Manson Youth Institution houses male offenders ranging in age from 15 to 21 in separate buildings, each with three wings containing 12 cells, a day room, and counselor offices. As the states' only facility for male youth, it houses chronic disciplinary inmates, close custody program, mental health, high security and general population inmates who are involved in a wide variety of programs including educational, vocational, and addiction services.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In a state institution, facility or region within a state unified school district this class teaches appropriate early intervention, elementary, secondary, special subjects and/or special education curricula to individuals enrolled in departmental education programs.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
- Teaches early intervention, elementary, secondary, special subject and/or special education curricula;

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Possession of a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience teaching a diverse group of people.
- Experience working in an institution setting.
- Experience participating in the PPT process.
- Experience providing data on annual goals and objectives.
- Experience with Transition Planning.
- Experience with CT Special Education Data Systems to create, develop, review and revise IEPs.
- Experience with administering, scoring and analyzing various achievement assessments.
- Experience writing comprehensive achievement evaluations.
- Experience progress monitoring and utilizing various data collection materials to gather data.
- Experience teaching and providing interventions to students with Emotional Disabilities.
- Experience with RTI/SRBI.
- Experience with special education identification and referral processes.
- Experience writing comprehensive achievement assessments.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Employment in this class is conditional upon possession of a valid Connecticut State Board of Education teaching certificate appropriate to the teaching assignment.
- Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a current Connecticut Motor Vehicle operator's license.
