The Connecticut State Library has an available opportunity for a Librarian 1 - State Library within the Law and Legislative department of Reference Services in Hartford.

    POSITION HIGHLIGHTS

    • Full Time, 40 hours per week.
    • Monday through Friday.
    • First Shift, 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM.
    • Hybrid (a combination of in-office/telework based on operational need).
    • Location: State Library and Supreme Court Building- 231 Capitol Avenue, Hartford, CT 06106.

      THE ROLE
      The State Library operates Connecticut's principal law library, which preserves and makes accessible the extensive collections of governmental and historical materials that reflect Connecticut’s long history as a colony and a state. The Law & Legislative department staff work closely with the Connecticut General Assembly, the Secretary of the State, and Judicial Branch as well as Executive Branch agencies, the legal community, and the general public seeking to research complex legal topics. 

      As a Librarian 1-State Library, you will be dedicated to learning about the history of state law, state legislation, and state government. The successful candidate will possess enthusiasm for working with material in various mediums (print, original records, electronic, etc.), have a demonstrated ability to commit to long-term projects that build on the years of existing research of those before them, and:
      • Staff the reference desk.
      • Learn about the library's resources by updating existing research guides, indexes, and finding aids.
      • Support efforts to digitize and make accessible the library's unique resources.
      The Librarian 1-State Library will join a team of librarians providing outstanding research assistance to State Library patrons in person and virtually, and will report to the Head of Research Services.

      The mission of the Connecticut State Library is to preserve and make accessible Connecticut’s history and heritage and to advance the development of library services statewide. The Connecticut State Library is an Executive Branch agency that provides a variety of library, information, archival, public records, museum, and administrative services for citizens of Connecticut, as well as for the employees and officials of all three branches of State government. The State Library also serves students, researchers, public libraries and town governments throughout the state. In addition, the State Library directs a program of statewide library development and administers the Library Services and Technology Act state grant. In conjunction with the Department of Higher Education, the State Library also administers researchitct.org– Connecticut’s source for free online resources.

      PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

      In the State Library this class is accountable for independently performing the full range of professional library duties and providing professional library services.

      EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

      • Performs professional library duties in any of the following areas: cataloging, interlibrary loan, reference, bibliographic services and collection management of books, serial publications, computer files, documents, audiovisual and other materials;
      • Assists patrons in locating and obtaining materials;
      • Furnishes information on library activities, facilities, rules and services;
      • Explains and assists in use of reference sources, catalogs, indexes and automated data bases;
      • Describes or demonstrates procedures for searching catalog files;
      • Searches catalog files and shelves to locate information;
      • Assembles and arranges displays of books and other library materials;
      • Maintains reference and circulation materials;
      • Answers correspondence on special reference subjects;
      • May compile subject bibliographies;
      • May select, order, catalog and classify materials;
      • May review and update records retention and disposition schedules for state agencies;
      • May plan and direct or carry out special projects;
      • May operate a small law library;
      • May train assigned staff;
      • May conduct workshops;
      • May serve as liaison to library groups and organizations;
      • May compile reports and statistics;
      • Performs related duties as required.

      KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

      • Knowledge of
        • professional principles and practices of library science including classification systems, reference sources and techniques, acquisition, cataloging and filing, bibliographic sources of information and library automation;
        • library administration principles and techniques;

        • analyze and solve problems relating to library methods and procedures;
        • utilize computer software.

      MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

      A Master's degree in library science or information science from a library school accredited by the American Library Association.

      PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

      • Experience with Connecticut legal and legislative procedures.
      • Experience using print and electronic legal research tools.
      • Experience utilizing technology to improve patron services.
      • Experience working with multiple (more than 1) patron groups in combining or involving separate disciplines.
