THE POSITION
The State of ConnecticutDepartment of Veterans Affairs (DVA) is now hiring for a Dining Room Supervisor to join their team. Please note you must be a current State of Connecticut employee to be considered for this position (see Selection Plan for additional details).

    • Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday from 6:00am - 2:00pm

              ABOUT US 
              For over 140 years, DVA has been caring for its veterans and their dependents. As a Department, we believe in "serving those who have served." This is accomplished through our: Office of Advocacy and Assistance, Residential Facility, Healthcare Center, and Cemetery and Burial Services. 

              The DVA has supported Connecticut Veterans and continues this tradition with Residential and Healthcare programming on our campus in Rocky Hill. There are two paths for residency at the DVA: 
              • Residential Facility: offers temporary, supportive living with programming designed to return Connecticut Veterans to independent living in the community; 
              • Sgt. John L. Levitow Healthcare Center: a state-of-the-art medical facility that offers long-term care for veterans with chronic, disabling conditions who require 24-hour assistance. 
              When you walk through the doors of the Healthcare Center (HCC), one immediately feels a sense of community, comfort, and camaraderie. The HCC stands apart from other 24-hour care centers with full time Physicians and Advanced Practice Registered Nurses on staff. Our highly trained staff is dedicated to providing compassionate care to meet the unique needs of Veteran patients, built on the foundation of integrity, honor, and respect.                 PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

                This class is accountable for supervising the actual serving phase of a food service operation including the maintenance of sanitation and cleanliness.

                EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

                • Schedules, assigns, oversees and reviews the work of staff;
                • Provides staff training and assistance;
                • Conducts performance evaluations;
                • Determines priorities and plans dining room work;
                • Establishes and maintains dining room procedures;
                • Develops or makes recommendations on the development of policies and standards;
                • Acts as liaison with other operating units, agencies and outside officials regarding unit policies and procedures;
                • Prepares reports and correspondence;
                • Monitors food production;
                • Maintains proper safety, sanitation and cleanliness of kitchen area and eating utensils;
                • Attends to special diet requirements of clients;
                • Maintains appropriate temperature controls of foods being served;
                • Oversees the distribution of food trays;
                • Maintains security of the dining area;
                • Ensures availability of supplies and equipment by controlling inventory;
                • Listens to complaints from those being served and takes corrective action;
                • May perform basic calculations for time and payroll records;
                • Performs related duties as required.

                KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

                • Knowledge of
                  • food service operations including health and safety requirements;
                  • food preparation and theory;
                  • food cooking and dietary terminology;
                  • kitchen equipment;

                • Supervisory ability.

                MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

                Four (4) years of experience in the preparation or serving of food on a large scale to include at least four hundred (400) meals per day.

                MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SPECIAL EXPERIENCE

                Two (2) years of the General Experience must have been in a supervisory capacity.

                NOTE: For state employees this experience is interpreted at the level of a Food Service Supervisor.

                PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

                • ServeSafe Certified
                • Experience supervising a trayline in a Skilled Nursing Facility
                • Experience using Microsoft Suite programs in day to day work operations for communicating with employees and tracking data in spreadsheets
                • Experience using written and oral communication skills to lead staff

                PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

                • Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties.
                • Incumbents must be free from communicable diseases.
                • A physical examination may be required.

                WORKING CONDITIONS

                Incumbents may be exposed to some risk of injury from equipment used in the kitchen and from patients/clients.
