Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) is a free-standing, modern facility located on the UCONN Health Center Campus in Farmington, CT. The office is a state-wide medical examiner system charged with the investigation of sudden and unexpected deaths that, by statute, fall under our jurisdiction.
We are seeking one (1) part-time
Medical Records Specialist 1 to work in our facility located at 11 Shuttle Rd. Farmington, CT 06032 with the following schedule:
First Shift - Monday - Friday
8:00am - 2:30pm

ABOUT THE ROLE:
The Medical Records Unit is involved with the creation, organization, quality assurance, maintenance and release of death certificates, autopsy reports and other documents that pertain to our death investigations. Duties for the incumbent in this role will include, but are not exclusive to:
- Assist in creating death records for the deceased residents of Connecticut
- Quality assurance that records are free of omissions and errors
- Teaching new and continuing users in electronic medical records systems
- May lead lower-level clerks as assigned

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In a state medical institution or facility medical records department this class is accountable for independently performing a full range of tasks associated with maintaining medical records and medical records coding activities.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
- Assists in maintaining a file of medical records such as daily admissions and discharges, daily census, case histories, results of diagnostic tests, signed releases of information, medical summaries and abstracts;
- Inspects reports and records for omissions and errors;
- Codes and files a full range of diagnoses according to anatomical systems and in conformance with accepted international classification systems (i.e. ICD, WHO, DSM3, DRG, etc.);
- Prepares statistical reports on such matters as classification of disease, laboratory, dental, X-ray and physiotherapy activities;
- Prepares death certificates, burial permits and other related records;
- Prepares reports to state and federal agencies as required;
- May attend probate court hearings and give testimony;
- Performs related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY
- Knowledge of
- basic medical terminology and human anatomy;
- medical coding principles and techniques with particular emphasis on International Classification of Disease Adopted procedures;
- principles of statistical data tabulation;
- office systems and procedures;
- Skills
- interpersonal skills;
- oral and written communication skills.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE
Four (4) years of experience in the maintenance of medical records and preparation of statistical reports.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of relevant state laws and regulations, excellent interpersonal skills, oral and written communication skills;
Ability to utilize computer software to compile data and run statistical reports;
Working knowledge of medical terminology and reviewing medical records for accuracy;
Experience with both paper and electronic records;
Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite with emphasis on Excel, Word, Outlook, Access & Adobe Acrobat;
Experience processing subpoenas or court orders;
Experience working with microfilm and other archival storage systems.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Persons having responsibility for supervising or observing the behavior of inmates or custodial clients will be required to possess a high school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) certification by the time of permanent appointment.
