The Connecticut State Library has an available opportunity for a Librarian 1 - State Library within the Division of Library Development at the Middletown Library Service Center.

    POSITION HIGHLIGHTS

    • Full Time, 40 hours per week.
    • Monday through Friday.
    • First Shift, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM.
    • Hybrid (a combination of in-office/telework based on operational need).
    • Location: Middletown, CT

      THE ROLE
      As part of the Division of Library Development, Middletown Library Service Center, the Librarian 1 - State Library is responsible for providing library circulation services to 270 Connecticut public and school libraries. The successful candidate will also work with the entire Division of Library Development staff for programming, Division services, outreach, and special projects.
      Duties will include:
      • Circulating books and other library materials using manual and/or automated systems.
      • Performing catalog maintenance activities such as filing, transferring, updating, revising and withdrawing cards/files.
      • Retrieving bibliographic information from automated library systems for circulation, interlibrary loan or copy cataloging purposes.
      • Receiving and processing of orders for print and non-print materials.
      • Performing and/or supervising performance of stack maintenance activities including sorting, shelving and shifting of material.
      • Assisting patrons in locating and using library materials and equipment.
      • Compiling statistics on particular function of library.
      • Pulling and organizing library materials for binding.
      • May enter bibliographic information onto automated library system.
      • May process interlibrary loan requests by filling those received from other libraries and/or searching for and requesting materials from other libraries.
      • Coordinating with Collection Development Librarian in maintenance and discoverability of collection.

The Connecticut State Library is an Executive Branch agency that provides a variety of library, information, archival, public records, museum, and administrative services for citizens of Connecticut, as well as for the employees and officials of all three branches of State government. The State Library also serves students, researchers, public libraries and town governments throughout the state. In addition, the State Library directs a program of statewide library development and administers the Library Services and Technology Act state grant. In conjunction with the Department of Higher Education, the State Library also administers researchitct.org– Connecticut’s source for free online resources.

      PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

      In the State Library this class is accountable for independently performing the full range of professional library duties and providing professional library services.

      EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

      • Performs professional library duties in any of the following areas: cataloging, interlibrary loan, reference, bibliographic services and collection management of books, serial publications, computer files, documents, audiovisual and other materials;
      • Assists patrons in locating and obtaining materials;
      • Furnishes information on library activities, facilities, rules and services;
      • Explains and assists in use of reference sources, catalogs, indexes and automated data bases;
      • Describes or demonstrates procedures for searching catalog files;
      • Searches catalog files and shelves to locate information;
      • Assembles and arranges displays of books and other library materials;
      • Maintains reference and circulation materials;
      • Answers correspondence on special reference subjects;
      • May compile subject bibliographies;
      • May select, order, catalog and classify materials;
      • May review and update records retention and disposition schedules for state agencies;
      • May plan and direct or carry out special projects;
      • May operate a small law library;
      • May train assigned staff;
      • May conduct workshops;
      • May serve as liaison to library groups and organizations;
      • May compile reports and statistics;
      • Performs related duties as required.

      KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

      • Knowledge of
        • professional principles and practices of library science including classification systems, reference sources and techniques, acquisition, cataloging and filing, bibliographic sources of information and library automation;
        • library administration principles and techniques;
      • Skills

        • analyze and solve problems relating to library methods and procedures;
        • utilize computer software.

      MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

      A Master's degree in library science or information science from a library school accredited by the American Library Association.

      PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

      • Experience providing circulation services to library patrons.
      • Experience with inter-library loan procedures.
      • Experience providing customer service to library patrons.
      • Experience with working in a public library, specifically with children's and young adults.
      • Experience collaborating with internal and external customers using both written and verbal communication.
