Position Highlights
Unified School District (USD) #1 follows a 12-month school calendar.
The USD #1 is the largest school district in the State; come be a part of something truly exciting and profoundly meaningful. The State School Department Head is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Education program(s) within one or more Correctional Facilities under the direction of a Principal. He or she will be responsible for:
- Evaluating and supervising staff, programs, and students;
- Promoting a positive school climate and culture;
- Implementing professional development; and
- Building the capacity of others.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In a state institution, facility or region within a state unified school district this class assists in the organization and supervision of educational programs for resident students or inmates.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
- Evaluates and supervises staff, programs and students;
- Promotes positive school climate and culture;
- Implementation of professional development;
- Building the capacity of others;
- Facilitates the PPT process;
- Prioritizes safety and security as it pertains to staff, victims, citizens, and offenders;
- Facilitates team meetings and case review conferences to assess student behavior and academic progress;
- Holds conferences with parents and/or officials concerned with student performance;
- Relates to professionals in ancillary educational roles;
- Maintains student records and writing reports;
- Models best Teaching Practices;
- Ensuring compliance in accordance with State and Federal laws and regulations and addresses Special Education complaints; and
- Analyzes, compiles, and presents data to guide decision-making processes.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE
A Master's degree in education or related field plus eighteen (18) semester hours of graduate credit and completion of fifty (50) school months of successful teaching or service employment as identified in State of Connecticut, Regulation of State Board of Education, Sec. 10-145d-574(a - f).
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Endorsement #092, Intermediate Administration or Supervision certification;
- Experience in urban/multi-cultural settings;
- Experience in a correctional or institutional environment;
- Experience participating in the PPT process;
- Experience providing data during staff meetings and PPT meetings;
- Experience with Transition Planning;
- Experience managing multiple projects with attention to deadlines and detail;
- Experience communicating verbally and in writing to multiple diverse populations and skill levels;
- Experience motivating and inspiring excellence in others, and holding staff accountable for student growth, academic results, performance, and culturally responsive practices;
- Experience using leadership skills including effective decision-making and problem solving;
- Experience using multiple approaches to address behaviors and instructional practices and empower students; and
- Experience with the CT Special Education Data System (CT-SEDS) to create, develop, review and revise IEPs.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Incumbents are required to possess and retain a Connecticut State Board of Education certification as an Intermediate Administrator/Supervisor.
- Incumbents in the class may be required to possess and retain a current Connecticut Motor Vehicle operator's license.
