PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In the Department of Motor Vehicles, within a small section of the central office this class is accountable for supervising all staff and activities which may include the examination, processing, and issuance of operators' licenses and/or registrations or advanced-level clerical activities which directly support one of the specialized units.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Performs a wide range of supervisory, administrative, and direct service duties as follows:
- Supervises office staff and activities;
- Interviews job applicants;
- Provides orientation, training, counseling, evaluation and discipline in accordance with departmental standards;
- Establishes work schedules and prioritizes workload;
- Approves leave time;
- Assigns duties and reviews results for accuracy, effectiveness, and conformance with policy;
- Reviews and evaluates courtesy and attitude of staff toward the public and other employees;
- Studies and evaluates office tasks performed to assess ongoing training or procedural needs;
- Develops and/or revises office forms and procedures as required;
- Maintains a variety of records, prepares office reports and correspondence;
- Ensures proper maintenance of office equipment;
- Orders supplies and maintains inventory control;
- Maintains control and is accountable for security of equipment, official documents and fees collected;
- Performs full range of office services;
- Provides and obtains information from a variety of people within and outside department;
- Handles most difficult office situations;
- Resolves customer complaints;
- May be involved in office activities concerning issuance of official motor vehicle documents;
- Performs related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE
Five (5) years of clerical experience, two (2) years of which must have involved the issuance of official documents requiring the examination of applications and supporting documentation or performing clerical tasks at the level of Office Assistant in the Department of Motor Vehicles.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED
- College training may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equalling one-half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of two (2) years.
- Two (2) years of experience as a Motor Vehicle Examiner or one (1) year of experience as a Motor Vehicle Examiner Specialist may be substituted for the General Experience.
- Two (2) years of experience as an Office Assistant or one (1) year of experience as a Head Clerk in the Motor Vehicle Department may be substituted for the General Experience.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience with handling customer complaints
- Experience training employees on DMV procedures
- Experience with interpreting motor vehicle laws, regulations, and policies
- Experience with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
- Experience with accessing and managing confidential information
