The State of Connecticut, Department of Children and Families (DCF) – Albert J. Solnit South Hospital and Psychiatric Residential Treatment Facilities (PRTF) – is accepting applications for one (1) full-time Instructional Assistant position, in Middletown, CT.


The mission of the State of Connecticut Department of Children and Families (DCF) is Partnering with communities and empowering families to raise resilient children who thrive. DCF’s Legal Division is responsible for ensuring compliance with state and federal law, conducting administrative hearings, and ensuring regulatory compliance.

The Instructional Assistant provides instructional support services to students working under the direct supervision of a classroom teacher.  Among other duties, the Instructional Assistant may provide one on one instruction, behavioral support in the classroom and during transition in the hallways while also taking care of any student's observation sheet as needed.

    • Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday | 7:50 am – 3:20 pm
    • Thursday, and Friday | 8:20 am – 3:20 pm

In your role as an Instructional Assistant, you will:

  • Provide instructional support services to students working under the direct supervision of a classroom teacher;
  • Assist in implementing Individualized Education Plans;
  • Provide one-on-one tutoring for eligible students;
  • Assist with classroom management, such as organizing instructional and other materials;
  • Assist students in participating in general school activities and is responsible for safety and personal conduct of students;
  • Supervise students in groups or individually when teacher is temporarily absent from classroom during school day (e.g., lunch, rest break, meetings);
  • Assist teacher in routine, necessary, school-related duties (e.g., taking attendance, ordering supplies, reporting lunch count);
  • Provide assistance in a computer laboratory;
  • Conduct parental involvement activities;
  • Provide support in a library or media center;
  • Collect data, attend meetings and prepare reports;
  • May assist students in areas such as self-help, feeding, toileting, language, gross and fine motor development as defined by the Individualized Education Plan designed by an interdisciplinary team;
  • May supervise students during field trips;
  • May be required to lift students and respond to incidents concerning students;
  • Perform related duties as required.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In a state agency this class is accountable for providing instructional assistance in the implementation of special educational programs.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A high school diploma or General Educational Development test (GED Certification) and two (2) years of college credit.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

  • An Associate's (or higher) degree may be substituted for the two (2) years of college credit.
  • Passing a State Board of Education adopted Paraprofessional Assessment which assesses content knowledge in mathematics, reading and writing and an understanding of how to assist in the instruction of these topics may be substituted for the two (2) years of college credit.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience working with youths in a hospital setting.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Incumbents in the class may be required to possess and retain a current Connecticut Motor Vehicle operator license.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to speak a foreign language.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Incumbents in this class may be required to pass a physical examination.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class may be required to lift light to medium weights and be exposed to some risk of injury from assaultive or abusive students.
