- This position requires regular in-state travel utilizing state vehicles.

We are a unique dual-status agency, having both federal and state missions. The CTMD’S primary public responsibilities are:
(1) To support the CT National Guard enabling the National Guard to provide ready units for Federal or State requirements;
(2) To train, resource and coordinate state emergency response assets, and;
(3) To plan for and protect citizens and their property in times of war, terrorism, invasion, rebellion, riot or disaster.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In a state agency this class is accountable for performing one or more tasks of a skilled nature (requiring prior experience or training, below the level of a specialized trades worker which would give the incumbent proficiency in required knowledges, skills and abilities on the first day of the job) in addition to performing lower level duties. Only complex tasks should be learned on the job. Tasks performed will be in one or several of the following areas:
- Building and equipment maintenance (operational and remedial) including the operation of trucks of five (5) ton or greater capacity or complex motorized equipment;
- Grounds care as a supervisor and/or specialized landscaping functions;
- Assists Qualified Craft Workers or other higher level employees in the trades areas.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE
Two (2) years of experience in one of the following areas:
- One of the skilled trades;
- Landscape maintenance or vegetable gardening;
- Operation of motor trucks or large buses.
The experience area should reflect the needs of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED
Graduation from a vocational or technical school with a diploma designating completion of subject requirements in a maintenance trade area may be substituted for the General Experience.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience assisting a trades person in the performance of construction, painting, plastering, carpentry, electrical work or plumbing tasks.
- Experience performing grounds maintenance including but not limited to mowing, weeding, raking, shoveling and snow and ice removal with a light truck, skid steer or tractor.
- Experience using, setting up, maintaining and operating ordinary shop tools necessary for the performance of skilled custodial and grounds maintenance. Tools and equipment include, but not limited to: Auto-scrubber machines, buffers, carpet cleaners, zero turn lawn mowers and string trimmers.
- Experience performing basic record keeping skills for recording preventative maintenance, vehicle assignments, and creating work orders. Must be proficient in using Microsoft Office or similar platforms.
- Experience operating automobiles, trucks and/or complex motorized equipment with possession of a valid Connecticut driver's license.
- Experience maintaining facility HVAC mechanical equipment; replacing belts, filters, strainers, etc.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties.
- A physical examination may be required.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Incumbents in this class may be required to lift moderate to heavy weights and may be exposed to significant levels of dust, heat, noise, extreme weather conditions and risk of injury from equipment and assaultive and/or abusive individuals.
- The appointing authority may require completion of an asbestos removal program consistent with EPA guidelines for operations and maintenance during employment in this class. Incumbents may be required to use protective equipment such as respirators and safety goggles.
