The Accounting Careers Trainee is a training program targeted at college graduates to provide up to a two-year training program to develop the vital tools to work as an Accounts Examiner.

ACT Program Highlights
As an ACT, you will be a part of a 1- or 2-year training program depending on your level of education.
The length of the training program is 2 years for individuals with a Bachelor's degree in accounting or in a closely related business field with at least 15 semester hours in accounting.
The length of the training program is 1 year for individuals with a Master's degree in accounting or a closely related business field with at least 15 semester hours in accounting. The length of the training program for an individual who earns a Master's degree in accounting or in a closely related business field with at least 15 semester hours in accounting while assigned to this classification is 1 year from the date the Master's degree is conferred or the end of the original 2-year training period, whichever comes first.
Throughout the training, you will:
- Examine financial records and documents;
- Examine audit reports, financial statements, budgets, or other available data;
- Perform risk assessments;
- Test internal controls;
- Perform reconciliations and basic analyses;
- Test transactions for compliance with federal and state statutes and regulations;
- Participate in audits and contract compliance;
- Interview agency staff and document relevant information.

Important salary note
If in a 2-year training program and have a bachelor’s degree, after one year you will either advance to step 5 $62,233.00 annually (if you have least 15 semester hours in accounting and/or qualifying experience) or step 7 $66,170.00 annually (if you have at least 30 semester hours in accounting). Once you have successfully completed the training program, you will be promoted to Accounts Examiner, salary plan AR 23 step 1 with an annual salary of $78,296.00.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In a state agency this class is accountable for mastering the skills necessary to satisfactorily complete the training program for a professional accounting or auditing position.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
- Receives training in introductory accounting or auditing work for development of skills and knowledge in order to qualify for advancement into a professional agency accounting or auditing position;
- Performs a variety of increasingly difficult duties as skills are acquired during the course of the training period;
- Examines financial records of governmental or private businesses and accounting methods and procedures to ensure compliance with statutes, regulations, guidelines or accepted accounting principles;
- May receive training in such areas as maintaining financial records and accounts, establishing financial statements and schedules, and preparing budget estimates;
- Performs related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY
- Knowledge of

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Candidates must be able to meet the experience and training requirements of the designated job class at the completion of the development program.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- A bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance;
- Experience with Microsoft excel including functions such as tables and formatting, data manipulation and pivot tables;
- Experience analyzing financial statements and data;
- Experience communicating with vendors, peers, management, and external stakeholders through phone, email, and face-to-face communication;
- Experience with auditing and compliance;
- Experience writing reports and documenting interviews;
- Experience interpreting and applying laws, statutes, and regulations pertaining to audit compliance;
- Experience examining and reconciling accounting records with supporting data, such as vouchers, invoices and cash receipts.
