The State of Connecticut, Department of Developmental Services (DDS) – West Region – is recruiting for one (1) part-time 2nd shift Developmental Services Worker 1 position based out of Lower Fairfield Respite in Norwalk, CT.

 

*STARTING SALARY INFORMATION

  • New hires to the classification of Developmental Services Worker 1 shall be paid an hourly rate of $24.00 (HM14).
  • Upon successful completion of the working test period, effective the payroll period following, the Employee shall be compensated at an hourly rate of $25.11 (HN14).
  • Employees who have previously completed a working test period in an 1199-covered direct-care position shall not be subject to this reduced training rate upon transfer or promotion.
  • Current DDS employees $25.11 – $34.04 based on salary calculations.

  • Regular Days Off: Sunday - Thursday
  • However, work flexibility is required in order to meet the needs of the agency.

In your role as a Developmental Services Worker 1, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Receive training in, then independently implement, policies and procedures designed to achieve objectives of a program for persons with intellectual disabilities;
  • Provide assistance and instruction to individuals in activities of daily living;
  • Participate in therapeutic programs for development of individuals capabilities;
  • Provide guidance and instruction to individuals in development of desirable personal habits, hygiene and social relationships;
  • Implement individual program plans;
  • Participate in preparation, serving and feeding of meals;
  • Perform housekeeping duties necessary to maintain a clean and health environment;
  • Participate in social and recreational activities;
  • Reinforce appropriate individual behavior through modification techniques;
  • May administer selected oral medications with appropriate training;
  • Perform related duties as assigned;

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Department of Developmental Services this class is accountable for acting as part of a team in an intensive programming effort designed for the care, guidance, supervision and training of individuals.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience and/or training that could be expected to provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities listed above.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preference may be given to those who possess the following qualifications:    
  • Experience working with individuals with Intellectual and/or Developmental Disabilities.
  • Experience with modern methods of working with individuals with an intellectual disability or related conditions.
  • Experience with challenging individuals.
  • Experience interacting with and explaining information to individuals in a fast-paced environment that involves phone and email contact.
  • Experience driving wheelchair vans.
  • Experience with overhead lift systems.
  • Medication Administration Certified through the Dept. of Developmental Services.
  • Experience using Microsoft applications, including Outlook, Excel, Teams, and Word.
  • Experience using assistive technology items such as smart speakers, smart cameras, artificial intelligence assistants and Apple/ Android tablets.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and maintain their Medication Certification as defined by the Connecticut Board of Examiners for Nursing Declaratory Ruling – Delegation by Licensed Nurses to Unlicensed Assistive Personnel,; when working in a location that does not have 24 hour nursing care.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to be bilingual or fluent in American Sign Language.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a valid Connecticut Motor Vehicle Operator's license, Public Passenger Endorsement or Commercial Driver's license for designated positions.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Incumbents in this class must possess physical and emotional health for efficient performance of duties; a physical examination may be required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class may be required to lift and restrain individuals; may have significant exposure to communicable/infectious diseases and to risk of injury from assaultive/abusive individuals; may be exposed to strongly disagreeable conditions.
