Introduction


The State of Connecticut, Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) has an exciting opportunity for a Seasonal Resource Assistant to support the Radiation Division of our Air Management Unit that is based out of DEEP Headquarters in Hartford, Connecticut.

Position highlights

Gain real work experience and work with some amazing people in the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP)'s Radiation Division. We have an exciting opportunity for a Seasonal Worker to assist the state in as it becomes the 40th Agreement State in the U.S. and DEEP assumes regulatory authority for licensing and compliance of users of radioactive material. This position will assist in the administrative preparation, transition, and implementations of state's radioactive material program. The Radiation Division ensures the safe and secure possession, use, storage, transportation, and disposal of radioactive material and radiation producing machinery. The unit ensures radioactive materials are used in compliance with Federal and Connecticut regulations in order to ensure radiation exposures to the general public and employees are maintained are safe levels and adverse impacts to the environment are minimized.

  • Interview and select in April/May;
  • Up to 35 hours per week, lasting no longer than 1 year or a total of 1,040 hours.
Responsibilities of this role include assisting Radiation Division Personnel with administrative tasks associated with preparation and transition of the radioactive materials program from the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to the state of Connecticut including:

  • Preparation of guidance documents and other information for regulated community;
  • Validating process documents and procedures;
  • Implementation of regulatory changes;
  • Entering and organizing data in computer files;
  • Maintaining program website;
  • Organizing project files, reports and other documents;
  • Attending meetings that may be virtual, in-person, or offsite location;
  • Assisting with the development of reports, metrics, plans or documents; and
  • Performs other related duties as required.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Completion of course work, training, or activities in the principles and practices in fields of radiation protection or science or engineering discipline;
  • Experience utilizing computer software;
  • Experience utilizing MS Office (e.g. Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etc);
  • Experience completing tasks independently;
  • Experience communicating in person, on the phone, and in writing.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Incumbents in this class who are assigned as supervisors of small recreational units will perform emergency first aid as needed and will be required to obtain and retain a Basic First Aid Certificate. 
  • Incumbents in this class may be required for certain positions to meet any of the following:
    • Proof of possession of a valid Motor Vehicle Operator license. 
    • Possession of a valid license to apply pesticides. 
    • College training in a specific field. 
    • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification may be required by specific state facilities. 
  • Incumbents performing lifeguard services must have and retain an American Red Cross (ARC) Lifeguarding Certification (includes CPR for the Professional Rescuer and Basic First Aid). An EMT or MRT certification may be substituted for the CPR and First Aid requirements.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Incumbents in this class must possess and maintain adequate physical strength and stamina to perform the duties of the class.
  • Incumbents performing lifeguard services must be able to demonstrate American Red Cross (ARC) waterfront lifeguarding swimming skills.
