Summary Statement

A class incumbent supervises the work of support staff responsible for collecting, tabulating, deciphering, and recording information to establish statistics.   An incumbent verifies that statistical releases meet all requirements/laws set forth by programs, projects, federal and state agencies including the Freedom of Information Act.

Nature and Scope

A class incumbent works under the general supervision of an administrative superior. Work involves analyzing, interpreting reports/information, and classifying data to establish statistics that meet regulations, laws, and established standards.  Statistical reports/information are program related to various issues/services.  Examples include vital statistics, demographic/economic data, human services, etc.  Other responsibilities include maintaining and updating unit policy/procedures and designing forms used for gathering/reporting statistical information.  The incumbent provides training in accurate data gathering and statistical reporting procedures.  Additional duties include researching, analyzing, and evaluating data for possible corrective action and adherence to federal, state, and agency rules/regulations, policies and procedures.

  • Directs unit operations.

  • Supervises technical support staff, providing training, day-to-day oversight, and performance evaluation.

  • Trains inter/intra agency staff in accurate data gathering and statistical reporting procedures.

  • Designs, develops, maintains, and updates forms, policies and procedures related to collecting, manipulating, and reporting the agency's statistical information.

  • Interprets standards used to compile statistics in order to respond to queries of agency, general public, and outside agencies.

  • Researches, evaluates, and corrects inconsistencies in existing data based upon statements, supporting documents, and adherence to applicable policies, laws, and regulations.

  • Provides statistical reports utilized by federal, state, and other agencies for program planning, design, and yearly projections.

  • Ensures confidentiality of vital documents, compliance with Freedom of Information Act, and guards against fraudulent use.

  • May represent agency as technical resource on committees/task groups, and hearings; and, serves as interagency coordinator for assigned data collection programs.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, other public agencies and private entities.

Job Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Statistical Information Supervisor
Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

  1. Six months experience in data collection which includes collecting, compiling and maintaining data from multiple sources such as files, records, databases, customers, staff or others.  
  2. Six months experience in creating reports which includes combining and presenting data from multiple sources in an organized format. 
  3. Six months experience in using an automated information system to enter, update, modify, delete, retrieve/inquire and report on data.
  4. Knowledge of staff supervision acquired through course work, academic training, training provided through an employer, or performing as a lead worker overseeing the work of others; OR supervising staff which may include planning, assigning, reviewing, and evaluating the work of others; OR supervising through subordinate supervisors a group of professional, technical, and clerical employees.
