Summary Statement

This class is responsible for operating a large scale teleprocessing computer at the entry level in the computer operator series.

Nature and Scope

Supervision is provided by a technical superior. Duties include operating computer peripheral equipment, learning large scale computer console operations, mounting tapes, monitoring security and detecting system malfunctions. Principal contacts are with higher level operators for instructional purposes.

Essential Functions

Essential functions are fundamental, core functions common to all positions in the class series and are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all job duties for any one position in the class.   • Operates computer peripheral equipment such as tape drives, laser and impact printers, and computer cartridges.
     
  • Learns, under supervision, the various system operations and capabilities specific to a large scale teleprocessing computer.
     
  • Learns, under supervision, large-scale teleprocessing computer console commands.
     
  • Mounts and verifies correct tapes for the program to be run.
     
  • Cleans tape drives, changes ribbons and adds toner to equipment as needed.
     
  • Monitors security of the premises; screens persons requesting access to system.
     
  • Detects system malfunctions and reports problems to superior.
     
  • Under supervision, writes logs and reports on work processed.
     
  • Learns environmental control systems and procedures.
     
  • Learns, under supervision, to make back-up tapes to provide against data loss.
     
  • May prepare system for job start-up following prescribed steps.

Job Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Computer Operator I
Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

  1. Knowledge of mainframe data processing.
  2. Knowledge of using an automated information system to enter, update, modify, delete, retrieve/inquire and report on data.
