This class is responsible for full performance work in the operation of a large scale teleprocessing computer.
Nature and Scope
Supervision is provided by a technical superior. Duties include operating a large scale computer and peripheral equipment, initializing the system for job start up and detecting system malfunctions. Principal contacts are with tape library personnel to acquire proper input tapes and with production control personnel to ensure proper operation of printers.

Operates a large scale teleprocessing computer and peripheral equipment.
Selects and mounts appropriate tapes, makes tape labels and cleans tape drives.
Prepares the system for job start up following prescribed steps.
Makes back-up tapes to provide against loss of data.
Detects malfunctions in computer, telecommunications or peripheral equipment; takes corrective action as directed by supervisor.
Monitors environmental controls and takes appropriate action when required.
Monitors the security of the premises; screens persons requesting access to system.
Writes logs and reports on work processed.
Ensures jobs which interfere with each other are not run concurrently.
May assist supervisor in training Computer Operator I's.

Knowledge of the components, organization and operation of a large scale teleprocessing computing system.

Ability to detect malfunctions in the computer, telecommunications, peripheral equipment and environmental control systems and take corrective action as directed by supervisor.
Ability to operate the computer console and peripheral equipment.
Ability to ensure the security of the premises.
Ability to write clear and concise reports and logs.
Ability to initialize and take down the system.
Ability to make back-up tapes.
Ability to comprehend technical manuals, operating standards and documented procedures.
Ability to mount and verify proper tapes for the job.
Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
Job Requirements
JOB REQUIREMENTS for Computer Operator II Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:
Six months experience in operating a mainframe computer and peripheral equipment.
Six months experience in detecting computer and network malfunctions.
Six months experience in teleprocessing components such as front-end processor, terminal clusters or line connecting.
