The class incumbent functions under a Warden or Deputy Warden of a Department of Correction (DOC) correctional institution and is responsible for managing all support services provided for the inmate population. Other functions performing at this level are line operational units and security. A class incumbent interacts with all levels of management within a correctional institution, other Department personnel, as well as significant contact with the general public and news media.

Provides effective management of the operation of payroll, visit scheduling, telephone operations, budget, business office, and commissary business/accounting functions for a correctional institution.
Prepares an institution’s budget, to include attendance at budget hearings with the Warden.
Responsible for all purchases made, including Correctional Officers uniforms and equipment.
Serves as the Public Affairs/Relations Officer for an institution, which includes responding to media inquiries, issuance of press releases, and conducting tours and visits for an institution.
Responsible for investigating and responding to pending court cases and lawsuits by inmates.

Knowledge of the principles, practices, and procedures of administrative analysis and the budgetary and payroll process.
Knowledge of the penal system security procedures, rules and regulations.
Knowledge of inventory control, commissary operation, supply procedures, and records management.
Ability to work in harmony with others, particularly under stress, employing tact with co-workers and inmates.
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Job Requirements
JOB REQUIREMENTS for Manager Support Services DOC Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:
Three years experience in managing support services such as mail operations, fleet management, commissary, laundry operations, food service operations, plant maintenance operations, graphics and printing, or materials management.
Six months experience in financial administration such as comprehensive analysis of programs, budgets, projects, services, alternatives, and costs; financial planning, revenue generation, revenue forecasting, expenditure forecasting, cash flow management and establishing internal control.
Six months experience in budget administration which includes managing, developing, analyzing and implementing budgets; developing strategic plans and establishing internal control.
Six months experience in developing policies or procedures.
Six months experience in operations management which includes planning, directing, coordinating, controlling and evaluating operations typically through subordinate supervisors.
