Description of Occupational Work

Laundry Services employees are responsible for performing laundry work in a state institutional facility following applicable safety and health laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies, and procedures.

Essential Functions

Essential functions are fundamental, core functions common to all positions in the class series and are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all job duties for any one position in the class. Since class specifications are descriptive and not restrictive, employees can complete job duties of a similar kind not specifically listed.

  • Performs laundry work using protective and other equipment and techniques in compliance with applicable safety and health laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies, and procedures.

  • Operates industrial and/or household laundry machines and equipment such as washers, dryers, irons, extractors, conditioners, presses, or folding equipment. 

  • Regulates machine processes when starting washers and dryers; selects appropriate settings to control volume of additives, specific cycles, and temperature.

  • Presses, folds, and stacks clothing, linens, and other items either by hand or by operating various machines and may mark laundry with names or mend laundry if necessary.

  • Sorts soiled laundry which includes separating by type, fabric, and color.

  • Pretreats laundry and removes stains from fabrics through the application of bleach, stain remover solutions, or steam sprays.

  • Weighs and counts clothing, linens, and other items, and records count on production records.

  • May use automated information systems and computer software to enter, update, modify, delete, retrieve, or report on laundry data and schedules.

  • May pick up and deliver laundry from and to wards.

  • May clean machinery using various chemical solutions, or clean and change machine filters.

  • Communicates and interacts effectively with people across cultures, ranges of ability, genders, ethnicities, ages, and races.

  • Performs other related duties as required.

Levels of Work

Laundry Worker
This is experienced level laundry services work.  Employees perform the full range of Essential Functions under general supervision.
  • Receives general supervision from a technical supervisor or higher; the supervisor provides general direction on all assignments, and regular review of progress, accuracy, and quality of work.  Supervisory advice or assistance is provided as needed.
  • Launders a variety of articles such as clothing, blankets, linens, towels or wash cloths.
  • Performs a variety of laundry tasks to maintain a clean, safe, and sanitary environment.
  • Operates laundry equipment and mixes proper amounts of water, detergents, bleach, cleaning and sanitizing solutions.
Laundry Supervisor
This is the supervisory level of laundry services work.  In addition to work performed by the Laundry Worker level, employees supervise and participate in laundry functions to ensure work is completed on schedule.
  • Receives minimal supervision from a technical supervisor or higher; the supervisor defines objectives, priorities, and deadlines and assists the employee with unusual situations.
  • Supervises two or more merit full-time positions.  The elements of supervision include performing the following on a regular and continuing basis:  planning, assigning, reviewing, evaluating, coaching, training, disciplining, and recommending hire, termination, and promotion.
  • Controls the workflow of high-volume laundry.
  • Performs various administrative and operational duties in the absence of the supervisor or subordinates.
  • Inspects laundry equipment and reports machinery breakdowns to the maintenance department.
Laundry Manager
This is the management level of laundry services work.  This level is distinguished from previous levels by planning, directing, managing, and evaluating large-scale laundry operations through supervisory staff that directly report to this class.  Positions supervising and performing daily laundry work as a significant part of the job would not be allocated to this level.
  • Receives minimal supervision from an administrative supervisor or higher; the supervisor defines objectives, priorities, and deadlines and assists the employee with unusual situations.
  • Plans and directs laundry operations. Supervises two or more merit full-time positions, at least one of which must be at the supervisory level.  The elements of supervision include performing the following on a regular and continuing basis:  planning, assigning, reviewing, evaluating, coaching, training, disciplining, and recommending hire, termination, and promotion.
  • Trains employees in washroom methods and techniques.
  • Sets standards for production and quality of work performed. Studies operations and procedures and institutes changes within scope of authority.
  • Installs production controls on each laundry machine and programs computerized washers. Keeps production records to track amounts of linen and clothing processed and shipped to various locations; prepares reports of laundry activities.
  • Prepares purchase orders to maintain linen inventory and supply of cleaning chemicals.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

The listed knowledge, skills, and abilities give a general indication of the core requirements for all positions in the class series; therefore, the KSAs listed are not exhaustive or necessarily inclusive of the needs of every position in the class.

Note: Employees are not required to be proficient in the KSAs listed in this section at entry, but within six months to one year of performing work as described in each level of work.

  • Knowledge of the operation of industrial and household laundry machines and equipment.
  • Knowledge of applicable state and federal laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of laundry materials, methods, processes, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of the proper use of personal protective equipment.
  • Ability to understand and follow instructions.
  • Ability to safely use and handle laundry detergent, bleach, and other laundry cleaning/sterilizing chemicals. 
  • Ability to record production counts.
  • Ability to operate institutional laundry machines and equipment in a safe manner.
  • Ability to mend torn linens and articles as required.
In addition to the above Knowledge, Skills and Abilities, the Laundry Supervisor requires:

  • Knowledge of large-scale laundry materials, methods, practices, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of supervision.
  • Knowledge of textiles and proper cleaning methods and chemicals.
  • Knowledge of recordkeeping and report writing.
  • Ability to analyze problems in laundry production and to make changes and revisions in practices where warranted.
  • Ability to order supplies and repairs.

In addition to the above Knowledge, Skills and Abilities, the Laundry Manager requires:

  • Knowledge of all phases of large-scale laundry operation, techniques and management.
  • Knowledge of washroom formulas for clothing and linens and all types of chemicals used in washers.
  • Knowledge of the methods and techniques of infection control.
  • Skill in staff supervision.
  • Ability to remain up-to-date and proficient on new laundry equipment and processes.
  • Ability to apply cost savings ideas to the production process.

  1. Knowledge of math such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages, or decimals.
