Summary Statement

An employee is responsible for operating a wheelchair shop which includes the design, construction and repair of wheelchairs for clients/patients in an institutional facility.

Nature and Scope

An employee reports to an administrative supervisor and is responsible for the operations of a wheelchair shop. An employee is responsible for overseeing the budget for supplies and materials and the scheduling of work assignments.  Work includes setting the construction and design goals for the shop, researching and engineering new equipment and ensuring that an inventory system of all wheelchairs and parts is maintained to generate needed supply orders. An employee also establishes a preventative maintenance schedule and has contact with a variety of outside vendors and distributors.

  • Oversees the operation of a wheelchair shop which involves overseeing the budget for supplies and materials, maintaining an inventory of wheelchair parts and ordering/purchasing supplies, materials and equipment.
  • Interacts with a variety of outside vendors and distributors for supplies and materials.
  • Establishes and maintains a preventative maintenance schedule for all wheelchairs, electric wheelchairs, and scooters.
  • Researches and engineers new equipment.
  • Designs and constructs adaptive equipment for clients/patients upon recommendation of other staff.
  • Provides in-service training to staff on the use and care of wheelchairs.
  • Prepares a variety to records and reports.
  • May supervise two or more merit full time positions. The elements of supervision include performing the following on a regular and continuing basis:  planning, assigning, reviewing, evaluating, coaching, training, disciplining, and recommending hire, termination, and promotion. 
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of the methods and techniques used in the maintenance and repair of wheelchairs/and adaptive equipment.
  • Knowledge of the basic structure and available adaptations of wheelchairs.
  • Knowledge of the basic types of seating systems (modular, custom modular and foam in place/molded seat) and how they are constructed.
  • Knowledge of material and techniques used in the design of adaptive equipment.
  • Knowledge of basic clients/patients needs.
  • Knowledge of tools and how they are used.
  • Knowledge of inventory methods and techniques.
  • Skill in the use of necessary tools.
  • Skill in the use of chemical and plaster mixtures to form seating molds.
  • Skill in wheelchair construction.
  • Ability to supervise the work of others.
  • Ability to analyze how wheelchair modifications will effect its overall usage.

Job Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Adaptive Equipment Technician II
Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

  1. Six months experience in constructing, repairing and modifying wheelchairs and adaptive equipment.
  2. Six months experience in record keeping.
