Summary Statement

Incumbents perform at a skilled level, inspection, maintenance and repair work to damaged automotive equipment such as automobiles, tractors, trucks and other light and heavy ground maintenance and construction equipment.

Nature and Scope

Technical aspects of the work are independently performed. A class incumbent reports to an administrative supervisor. Assignments require a degree of evaluative thinking and are carried out in accordance with standard trade practices and general work instructions. The work includes diagnostic procedures, determination of the problem and effectively repairing damaged vehicles.

Essential Functions

  • Inspects vehicles to evaluate the extent of the damage and estimate cost of repairs.
     
  • Decides if damaged area should be repaired or replaced.
     
  • Repairs damaged areas by sanding, body filling, welding, taping and spray painting.
     
  • Procures and installs parts where damaged area can't be repaired.
     
  • Repairs or replaces door panels, glass, upholstery and other components.
     
  • Applies prime and finished coats of paint to assure blending and match of the original paint.
     
  • Keeps records and prepares written work orders, requisitions and reports.

  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
  • Knowledge of metals, fiberglass, body filler, paints and coloring as utilized in the repair of automotive vehicles.
  • Knowledge of the proper procedures for repairing and refinishing automotive vehicles.
  • Skill in blending and matching original paint.
  • Ability to assess and estimate cost of repairs.
  • Ability to prepare reports and maintain records.

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Automotive Body Mechanic II
Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

  1. Six months experience in auto body repairing and painting.
